Rent a villa in Mauritius

QUESTION: I would like to rent a private apartment or house in Mauritius as a way of saving costs on a family holiday. Any ideas? - John Muller

ANSWER: There is plenty of accommodation available for private rental on the island. You can shop around on the Internet, as there are a number of websites advertising accommodation priced in Euros. You can expect to pay around 40 Euros (R380) per day for a good one-bedroom villa or apartment and around 100 Euros (R950) per day for a family house. You will pay less for properties located away from beaches or facilities. Check out www.mauritiuspalms.com and www.isla-mauritius.com. You can find some great deals priced per week on the websites www.homeholidays.com and www.villarenters.com. I found a modern villa not far from the beach in Pereybere with a private swimming pool for 175 - 245 Euros (R1660-R2320) per week. The villa sleeps six, is air-conditioned and has two full bathrooms.

However, before you book you need to check the price of available airfares to Mauritius. The flight/hotel packages you see advertised include discounted airfares which you may not be able to get. Independent tickets to Mauritius can be very expensive. You will pay more for rentals over the peak Christmas/New Year period. There are also fewer options available, as many owners are using their holiday homes at this time.

How do I get a free ticket?

QUESTION: Whenever I try to use air miles to get a free seat, I am told that there are no seats available and I end up having to pay for a ticket, earning even more miles. Is it really possible to earn free flights or is accumulating air miles just a waste of time? - Dan Jones

ANSWER: It certainly is possible to get free tickets, but you need to book early and be flexible. Airlines only make a limited number of seats available for redemption (and upgrading), so you need to get in before anyone else does. If you want a seat in a peak period, you need to book at least six months in advance. But, rather than trying to use them over Easter, the Christmas holidays or to attend big sporting events, redeem your miles for out-of-season holiday breaks and private events like wedding and birthdays, when the demand is likely to be least. For popular international destinations like the United Kingdom and Australia, you will have a better chance of success if you compile a long list of possible dates. You can then plan your overseas holiday around the date you get a seat. And don't wait until just before the miles expire. Thousands of other people will be in the same boat, so the chances of getting a ticket to any destination is likely to be very slim.

Beachfront hotel in PE

QUESTION: Can you recommend a good beachfront hotel in Port Elizabeth for a short family holiday. - Janice Dunn

ANSWER: The three main hotels are the Garden Court Kings Beach (which once reigned supreme as the five-star Elizabeth Hotel), the Courtyard Hotel (part of the Boardwalk Casino complex) and the Marine Protea Hotel. All offer rooms with sea views. Smaller stylish hotels include the Humewood Hotel, popular with families, and the boutique-style Beach Hotel. You can also try the four-star Paxton Hotel, which overlooks the harbour.

What does half-board mean?

QUESTION: We are booking a holiday in the Caribbean and would like to know the difference between half-board, full board and all-inclusive packages at hotels. We wanted a bed and breakfast rate, but this is not available at some resorts. - Eric Davids

ANSWER: Half-board means you get breakfast and dinner, full board gets you three meals a day and an all-inclusive rate usually means that you will receive
meals, afternoon tea and all drinks for free. When it comes to alcoholic drinks, some hotels restrict the number of hours free drinks are available, while others only offer local brands for free. Then there are the resorts that offer a free bar service 24 hours a day and even include the contents of the mini-bars in the package.

Should I visit Burma?

QUESTION: I would like to visit Burma (now named Myanmar), but I know that this is a politically sensitive issue. Is it okay to visit the country now? - Sheldon Price.

ANSWER: Detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has not changed her stance and has appealed to tourists not to visit the country. She maintains that
tourism confers legitimacy on the ruling military junta and the tourist dollars fuel government repression. However, there are others who say that tourism is one of the few ways locals can earn a living independently and that the presence of
foreigners serves to curb human rights abuses. The government has stopped forcing visitors to change $200 dollars into government notes on arrival, but tourism is still very controlled. The decision on whether to visit or not depends on your assessment of the situation. If you do go, you can minimise your support for the regime by staying in family-owned hotels, buying goods directly from the people and not from tourist shops and avoiding any package tours, which are run by government agencies.

Weekend break in Sandton

QUESTION: How can I find a cheap rate for a good Sandton hotel for a weekend break? - Lettie Price.

ANSWER: Hotel groups like Southern Sun, City Lodge and Protea Hotels all have weekend specials, which offer rooms at reduced rates if you stay a Saturday night and/or two nights. Phone their central reservations numbers or check out their websites for details. Some of the best offers are available at the Sandton Sun and the Protea Balalaika, which are both linked to shopping centres. You can often get a good price at the Southern Sun Grayston Hotel. If you are feeling lucky, you can bid for a room at one of the City Lodge hotels on the website www.bid2stay.co. za or look for last-minute specials on the website www.mtbeds.co.za

Where to stay in Bali

QUESTION: I want to take my family on holiday to Bali. I have been advised that we should stay in Kuta. Do you agree? If not, which area would be best for a family holiday? - Gregory Dwyer

ANSWER: The Kuta area is the main tourist zone in Bali, with plenty of shops, hotels, guest houses, bungalows, restaurants and bars. It is particularly popular among backpackers and travellers on a budget, as it offers great value and fun experiences. The main Kuta beach, overlooked by the Hard Rock Hotel, is the most populated beach with surfers, hawkers and families. Neighbouring Legian provides a quieter holiday experience, but also has plenty of shopping and nightlife.

Further down the coast, the trendy Seminyak area is for those who value boutique hotels, great restaurants, stylish bars and the chic nightclubs. This is the Bali of the jet-set and the gay crowd, but also offers great villa accommodation for families who like privacy and 'doing their own thing'. Set on its own peninsula is the Nusa Dua area, which is home to a string of large four and five-star hotels with all the facilities of top-class resorts. They probably best capture the Bali you see in advertisements; cocktails bars set alongside sparkling pools and couples walking hand-in-hand along palm-fringed beaches. These resorts are very safe and offer great facilities for children, but may not suit those who prefer the bustling island-life atmosphere that the other areas offer. So, choose the area that suits your family best, and enjoy your island holiday.

Wine tours by cycle

QUESTION: I have heard of a tour where you can cycle through the winelands in New Zealand. As we will be visiting relatives there later this year, I would appreciate details of any such tour. - Anne Blanton

ANSWER: Bicycle tours are offered on the country's famous Marlborough Wine Trail. This can be great fun if you don't overdo your tasting at the various wineries! The most popular route features 30 wineries set along a 24km route, so you won't kill yourself cycling each day. One of the operators is Wine Tours by Bike, which is located in Blenheim and offers a full service. If you have a puncture or damage your bike, they will provide you with a replacement. You can get further details on their website: www.winetoursbybike.co.nz

Barcelona's Olympic hotel

QUESTION: Friends of ours have recommended staying in a hotel in Barcelona that was built in the port area for the 1992 Olympic Games. They don't know the name, but say it has great views and is located right next to a massive sculpture of a fish. Our travel agent cannot assist us, can you? - Magda Spies.

ANSWER: The hotel they are referring to is the Hotel Arts Barcelona, which is operated by the Ritz-Carlton group. Rooms have views of the Barceloneta beach, the marina and the cathedral-dotted skyline. The sculpture is by the famous US-based architect Frank Gehry. Try discount hotel websites for the best room rates.

Revolutionary tour in Cuba

QUESTION: I would like to visit Cuba and find out more about Che Guevara, who is my hero. Is there a museum dedicated to him or a guided tour of his home? - Simon Masterton

ANSWER: There are a number of tours in Havana that focus on aspects of the famous revolutionary's life. The most comprehensive one follows his footsteps through the Sierra Maestra Mountain and Havana. As part of the tour, you also get the chance to meet Che's widow, Aleida March, his son, Camilo Guevara, and the famous Cuban photographer Raul Corrales. The tours are organised in collaboration with the Ernesto Guevara Research Center in Havana, under the direction of his family. The tours are available from travel agencies specialising in Cuba. You can also check out the website www.cubaselecttravel.com for details.

Why the service fee?

QUESTION: I went to a travel agency in Sandton recently and they insisted I pay a service fee (on top of the cost of the ticket) to book a flight. Surely this is just another rip-off? - Raymond Smit

ANSWER: No, it is not a rip-off. Service fees are becoming a standard practice in the travel industry - and have been in force in certain agencies for some time. Airlines have cut the commission payable to agents, so they have to generate income from service fees charged to the customer. Supporters say it is a better system as it eliminates hidden commissions and you pay for the service you get. The alternative is to book directly with the airline or over the Internet. If you need an agent's help to find a flight or a cheap price, you are going to have to pay for it.

Copacabana or Ipanema?

QUESTION: We have always dreamt of staying at a hotel on Copacabana Beach in Rio. However, friends who have visited Brazil recently say that the area around Copacabana is unsafe and we should rather stay at Ipanema Beach. We would hate to give up on our dream. What do you think? - Gina White

ANSWER: Ipanema is generally regarded as a safer and more upmarket area than the more famous Copacabana these days. However, if you are staying directly on the beachfront, you should not have too many problems wherever you stay. Copacabana has some great hotels, like the historic Copacabana Palace, the Le Meridien and the J.W.Marriott. I would not recommend staying in a cheaper hotel on one of the back roads or down a sidestreet. If you are on a tight budget, the smaller hotels and guest houses in the Ipanema area are probably a better bet. It doesn't matter where you stay, don't walk around with cameras, jewellery or other tourists trappings and keep to the busier areas.

Personal guides at Disney parks

QUESTION: We are planning a trip to either Disney World in Florida or Disneyland in California with friends and would like to know if one can hire a personal tour guide in these theme parks. Ideally, the guide would escort the children to all the best attractions and show them the sights, leaving us to choose what we want to see and the opportunity to have a less stressful holiday. - Joanna Wolmarans

ANSWER: Yes, both theme parks offer VIP tour services. You will be provided with an experienced personal guide who will plan the itinerary which best suits your group, provide an escort service through the park and get the best seats in the house for live shows, parades and nighttime spectaculars. The only downside is that this service does not come cheap. At Disney World, the cost is 125 dollars per hour for a minimum of six hours. At Disneyland the cost is 75 US dollars per hour for a minimum of four hours if booked 48 hours in advance and 95 dollars per hour for same-day bookings. Prices exclude entrance fees to the parks. You can find out more by checking out the www.disney.com website or calling (714) 300-7710 for Disneyland or (407) 560-4033 for Disney World. Bookings are taken up to 90 days in advance and you can get a discounted hourly rate if you are staying at a Disney resort or your trip falls outside of the US
holidays.

Harry Potter tour

QUESTION: We are to visit relatives in London and my son is a Harry Potter fan. Is there a tour or museum I can take him to? - Linda Brown

ANSWER: Tours of locations used in the Harry Potter films are offered by a number of companies, including British Tours, Lynott Tours and Harry Potter Fan Trips (www.hpfantrips.com). You can take a three-hour tour of the film locations in London, which include Kings Cross station, London Zoo, Leadenhall Market and Blackriars Bridge. You can also take a five-hour tour to Oxford, where the famous university was used as a location for many of the Hogwart school scenes. If you have 10 hours to spare, you can tour locations in Oxford and Gloucester, where the Norman Cathedral was used in a number of scenes. An additional hour takes you to Lacock Abbey, where some of the classroom scenes were filmed. The tours can be private or as part of a group.

Using return voucher of air ticket

QUESTION: I bought a return air ticket, but only want to use the return half of the ticket. Is this possible? - Ian Grootman

ANSWER: Airlines generally insist that all flight coupons are used in the correct sequence and will cancel the return segment if the initial flight is not used. This is particularly important on international flights, where you have multiple destinations. A possible exception is where each leg was booked and priced separately - you may be able to use your return coupon only. However, whatever the conditions attached to your ticket, you can always explain your situation
to someone at the airline's head office or booking centre and you may get lucky.

Best hotel in Venice

QUESTION: Which is the best hotel in Venice? - Jane Thompson

ANSWER: The Hotel Cipriani is regarded as the place to stay in Venice and one of the world's most famous hotels. The haunt of many celebrities and well-heeled travellers, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman honeymooned here. The hotel is set in gardens at the end of Giudecca Island, a short boat ride from St Mark's Square. Most of the rooms, which start at around 1000 US dollars per night in high season, have balconies overlooking the canal or the hotel's gardens. Note that the hotel is closed from January 5 - March 13 next year.

Family-friendly cruises

QUESTION: We will be visiting the United States and Europe later this year and would like to go on a cruise with our two children, aged 8 and 11. Can you recommend a company that specialises in family cruises? - Mike Ellis.

ANSWER: The two most popular cruise lines for families are Carnival and Celebrity Cruises. Both offer a variety of family-friendly activities and children's clubs. Camp Carnival caters for children aged 2-14 and Celebrity's X-club offers programmes for those aged 3-17. The respected travel magazine Conde Nast Traveler recommends Crystal Cruises, which offers playrooms and in-stateroom babysitting. Over holiday periods, they organise fun events like pizza parties,
princess and pirate T-shirt painting, 'Crystal Idol' competitions, pajama movie nights and family karaoke.

'Unbelievable' Christmas dinner surcharge

QUESTION: We plan to visit Dubai in December, but our agent tells us that the hotels we selected all have compulsory charges for a Christmas Eve dinner of 40-75 US dollars per person. As we specifically chose a Muslim country for our holiday to avoid the commercialism of Christmas, we find this unbelievable. Can we refuse to pay? - Molly Rae

ANSWER: You cannot refuse to pay if it is a booking condition for this period and you are notified in advance. What you can do is find a hotel that does not levy the charge. Compulsory charges for Christmas dinners and New Year's Eve banquets are becoming common around the globe. Hotel managements see this as a way of generating additional income over a high-demand period and guests are force to pay up, whether they attend the functions or not. Smaller hotels or budget chains (like Holiday Inn Express) do not always levy this charge, so you could ask your agent to locate a hotel in your chosen location and price bracket that does not have this compulsory add-on. A hotel in Dubai which has made the charge optional this year is the Al Murooj Rotana Hotel & Suites.

First ski holiday

QUESTION: My husband and I are planning to go on our first skiing holiday over Christmas. None of our friends can join us and I’ve heard from a friend of mine that it’s better to go in a group especially for the “apr่s ski” in the evenings. Can you tell me who I can contact to go as part of a tour group? - Alwiena van Veen.

ANSWER: While it can be fun to be surrounded by friendly compatriots for "apr่s ski", it can be just as rewarding meeting travellers from other countries and getting to know their cultures and traditions. Remember, there is no guarantee that you will automatically get on with your fellow countrymen! I don't think you need to worry unduly about being the only South Africans in a resort, as there are likely to be a few compatriots on most packages you book from this country. If you prefer to be certain, you can contact the Springbok Ski Club (tel: 011- 802 4868), which organises trips to Verbier in Switzerland.

Tickets for 2010 World Cup

QUESTION: Relatives and friends from England and Australia are planning to visit us during the World Cup in 2010. However, I am concerned that they may not be able to get tickets to any of the games. How do we buy tickets? When will they go on sale? - Denise Mitchell

ANSWER: You can relax. Ticket sales for the 2010 World Cup have not been finalised yet. Football's governing body, Fifa, will be in charge of all ticket sales. About three million tickets will be available for the tournament. One million will be allocated to international visitors, one million to sponsors, teams and the "Fifa family" and another million to South African football fans. The tickets are likely to be sold through the Fifa website and could be available in 2009.

Single surcharge a rip-off?

QUESTION: I am single and enjoy my privacy while travelling, so I always book a single room for myself. However, what I have discovered is that single travellers are severely discriminated against in terms of pricing. We always have to pay a substantial surcharge compared to couples and family groups, sometimes as much as 40 percent more. I believe this is unfair, as we are on the same tour and enjoy the same facilities in the hotel. Is there a travel company that does not subscribe to this unfair practice? - Louis van Heerden

ANSWER: The travel companies are not really to blame for single surcharges. The increased cost is directly related to the price of hotel rooms. In the past, hotels had single rooms, which were smaller than double rooms and often contained a single bed. However, these days most hotels use the same rooms for single and double bookings. If only one person occupies that room, it makes sense that they should pay more than each of the two people who occupy an identical room. In fact, many hotels no longer have a single or double rate - the price is per room. Some tour companies will offer to find you a traveller of the same sex to share the room with you (thus bringing down the cost to what other travellers are paying). However, if you want the privacy of your own room, you will have to continue to pay for it.

How to get into an airport lounge

QUESTION: I never fly business or first class, but would like to use one of the lounges at Johannesburg Airport when I am going overseas to avoid the crush in the terminal. Is it possible to pay to get into these lounges, even if you are not flying with that particular airline? - Margaret Sampson

ANSWER: You can pay to use the international Premier Club airport lounge at Johannesburg Airport. This is not affiliated to any one airline, but is used by as a courtesy lounge by a number of organisations, travel companies and financial institutions. The entry cost is around R140 per person (check this, as the price could change due to currency fluctuations). This gives you the right to use all facilities in the lounge which include showers, Internet access, fax services, TV and a smoking area. You also get free sandwiches and snacks along with free drinks (beer, wine, liquor, sodas, juice and bottled water). You are allowed to use the lounge from three hours before your flight time. There are also Premier Club lounges in Cape Town and in domestic terminals.

Buy a simcard in India

QUESTION: I am going on a business trip to India and would like to avoid roaming charges on my cell phone. Is it possible to buy a simcard in India that allows one to make local and international calls, as well as receive international calls? How much is is likely to cost? - Michael Rennie

ANSWER: Yes, you can buy a simcard, which will work in your SA phone as long as it is not blocked for other simcards by your service provider. Simcards (with a 10-digit Indian phone number) are available from most phone retailers for around 100 rupees (around R17). You can use it for local and international calls. There is no charge for incoming international calls and the international dialling code for India is 91. Airtime cards are available in a number of denominations and calls are not considered expensive. Please note that proof of identity is required when buying a simcard in India, so you should take along a photocopy of the page of your passport showing your details and photograph or a copy of your driver’s license. You fill in a purchase form and leave the copy with the retailer. Never leave your passport, just a copy.

Cruising without a porthole

QUESTION: I am planning to take my wife on a one-week cruise and are trying to decide what cabin category to book. As we are on a budget, I am inclined to book a medium-priced inside cabin, but my agent has recommended a much more expensive outside cabin on a higher floor. What do you say? - Simon Els

ANSWER: Your cabin choice depends on how you plan to spend your time on board. If you see your cabin as "somewhere to sleep" and expect to spend most of your time at the pool or enjoying the facilities on board, the mid-priced cabin should be adequate for your needs. Remember, though, that you will not have a window or a porthole in an inside cabin. If you enjoy relaxing in your cabin and prefer privacy to public spaces, then it would be worthwhile paying for an upgraded cabin with a window or balcony. Essentially, it's a balancing act when you are on a budget - the cheaper the cabin, the more you have to spend. And vice-versa.

Rent an apartment in New York

QUESTION: I am going to be staying in New York for six weeks later this year. Do you have any suggestions on where to stay for that long a period without it costing a fortune? - Meg Harris

ANSWER: New York is an expensive city, whether you are staying for a short or a long time. You best bet is to check the listings for the city in Craigslist (www.craigslist) under the heading "sublets/temporary". You may get a room in an apartment or a studio or apartment of your own. Either way, it will be much cheaper than any hotel or bed and breakfast. You could also post an advert in the housing section of Craigslist, explaining exactly what you are looking for. This service is free. However, you need to be aware that not all sublets are legal and you could be evicted in exceptional cases. Make sure that you get the details of your deal in writing.

To tip or not to tip

QUESTION: We often stay in bed and breakfast establishments these days and many of them consist of only two or three rooms run by a couple. I find it a problem deciding whether I should tip or not. While I normally tip in hotels, I feel the host or hostess might be offended if I leave a few coins on the breakfast tray or on my pillow. What do you think? - Isobel Reynolds

ANSWER: I asked a few travellers and the general consensus is that they would not tip the owners of a guest house, but may offer a tip if they are being served by hired staff. Most people said that, in the case of exceptional service from the owners, a small gift (like a box of biscuits or sweets) would be more appropriate. One guest house owner I asked said a thank-you card or a good comment on their website would be the best reward for an enjoyable stay.

Refund for air ticket

QUESTION: I would like to know whether we are entitled to a refund on an airline ticket which we bought in the UK for a flight to France. The flight was cancelled and we were issued us with a voucher for another flight with the airline. We did not want to wait for an available flight with the airline, so we bought a new ticket on another carrier. We took the vouchers, but they are pretty useless to us now. Are we entitled to a refund? If so, who should we claim it from? - John Sutherland

ANSWER: You are entitled to a refund from the airline in terms of the passenger rights regulations adopted by the European Union in 2004. EU Regulation 261/2004 states that passengers whose flights are cancelled "should be able either to obtain reimbursement of their tickets or to obtain rerouting under satisfactory conditions". You should contact the airline directly.

Princess Diana's restaurant

QUESTION: My cousin visited a restaurant in London which was one of Princess Diana's favourites and has become a shrine to her. The walls are apparently covered with pictures of her. She said it is called Dianas, but cannot remember the exact address. As a big Diana fan, I would love to visit when I am next in London. Can you help? - Katie Brown

ANSWER: The place you are looking for is Cafe Diana, which is close to Kensington Palace. You cannot miss it, with its bright decor and pictures of the Princess. The address is 5 Wellington Terrace, Bayswater, and the nearest tube station is Notting Hill Gate. If you visit, you are bound to run into many other fans of Princess Diana.

Holiday with kids in Phuket

QUESTION: We are going on holiday to Phuket with our families in September. As this is the rainy season, what can we do with the kids in case of rain? Also, as we are limited to 20kgs of luggage, in the event of excess baggage on our return, is there a facility at Singapore Airport whereby one can send excess luggage ahead from Singapore Airport to Cape Town and what would it cost per kilogram? - Luis Oliveira

ANSWER: It seldom rains continuously in Phuket. In most cases, a downpour of 30-60 minutes will be followed by sunshine. Remember that it is never cold, so many tourists are happy to sit out the showers on the beach or at a restaurant. However, if the rain does set in, there are plenty of indoor attractions at the big shopping centres on the island. A big shopping mall, Jungceylon, has recently opened in Patong Beach, but you can also go to the movies at Central Festival shopping centre (with all the latest releases in English with Thai sub-titles) or ten-pin bowling at the Big C Supercentre. However, bargain-hunting and dining out is likely to keep you more than happy. Youngsters seem quite happy to be let loose in one of the many Internet cafes, where they can surf the web or play online games for about R15 an hour.

As for excess baggage, presumably most of your shopping will be done in Thailand, so your problem is likely to occur when you board your connecting flight to Singapore in Phuket. The best solution is to arrange for your excess baggage to be picked up by a courier before you leave for the airport. Most of the tourist shops can arrange this service or you can make the arrangement with a courier company in South Africa before you leave. If you don't want your prized purchases to go astray, you could opt to use the courier service for your excess clothing, toiletries and shoes.

Stay near the Cradle of Humankind

QUESTION: Is there accommodation within the Cradle of Humankind outside Johannesburg? - Mike Lee

ANSWER: The privately-owned Cradle Nature Reserve offers eight thatched chalets on the banks of the Motsetse stream. The chalets are self-catering, but there is also a restaurant on the premises. (Telephone 011- 659 1622). The Cradle Lodge, a thatched country retreat, has four double bedrooms. The lodge is located two kilometers north of the Sterkfontein Caves. (Telephone: 011-956 6206). The Tweefontein Stables in the cradle offers self-catering guest rooms for trailriders.

Day visit to Kruger Park

QUESTION: We intend visiting the Kruger National Park during the school holidays and I read that it is necessary to book to ensure entry. I know that accommodation has to be booked in advance, but I have never heard of pre-booking for a day visit. What is the situation? - Lolly Britz

ANSWER: It certainly is advisable to book in advance for day visits, especially over peak periods. There is a real chance of being turned away, as all nine entrance gates to the park have day visitor quotas. When that figure has been reached, the gate is effectively closed to anyone without a booking. The quotas, which range from 350 to 750 people per gate, were put in place to ensure that the park does not become crowded and to minimise the risk of environmental damage. Bookings should be made with the park's central reservations on telephone 012-428 9111.

My favourite Bangkok hotels

QUESTION: We are looking for a really nice hotel in Bangkok and I know you are an expert on Thailand. Come on, give us a few of your favourites! - Nancy Ellis

ANSWER: Of course, choosing a hotel depends on your requirements and your budget. But here goes. For world-class luxury, nothing tops The Peninsula overlooking the Chao Praya River (around US$250 a night). It has been voted the best hotel in the world and deservedly so. For mid-range luxury, try the Sofitel Silom, with its splendid views, or The Davis off Sukhumwit Road for a unique Thai-style atmosphere. The best family choice is the Pathumwan Princess Hotel, which is linked to the MBK shopping mall and the Skytrain. For younger travellers, nothing beats the stylish Buddy Lodge in Khoasan Road. Boutique hotels which offer excellent value and swimming pools, the best choices are the Silom Serene and the Siam Heritage. You can get excellent rates at all Bangkok hotels through Internet discount websites, like www.asiarooms.com, www.hoteltravel.com and www.asiatravel.com.

Visas for Scotland and Wales

QUESTION: I am travellling to England next May to meet and tour with British friends. They are now talking of possible excursions to Scotland and Ireland. Do I need additional visas or will a visa to England allow me to enter Scotland and Wales? What happens in the case of Ireland? - Mike Stewart

ANSWER: As there are no border control posts between England, Wales and Scotland, you will not need to show your passport and definitely do not need a visa. In the case of Ireland, you will pass through a border post, but South African passport holders do not require visas to enter. However, you may need to show your return air ticket and proof of sufficient funds to support you during your stay.

Flights to Sri Lanka

QUESTION: We want to go to Sri Lanka on holiday. Neither SAA or SriLankan Airlines flies between Johannesburg and Colombo. Which is the best airline or route? - Peggy James

ANSWER: You can fly with one of the Middle Eastern airlines, like Emirates or Etihad. There is no direct flight, so you will have to change planes at Dubai or Abu Dhabi. If you are one of the many South Africans who are determined to collect Voyager Miles on every trip, you could fly with SAA to Mumbai (Bombay) and then catch SriLankan Airlines or one of the Indian budget airlines from Mumbai to Colombo. If you cannot get seats, you could also fly via Europe or the Far East, but this would add substantially to your travel time.

Dad's hotel in Berlin

QUESTION: I am taking my aged father on holiday to Germany. I am making the bookings, but he has asked me to find a specific hotel in Berlin, which remembers visiting decades back. He says the hotel was in a historic building, smart and close to the Brandenburg Gate. My agent has given me a list of hotels in the area, but he does not recognise the name. Perhaps you may have suggestions that could assist me in identifying the hotel he might be referring to. - Rory Klein

ANSWER: Hotels come and go, but the most famous hotel overlooking the Brandenburg Gate is the Hotel Adlon Kempinski. It celebrates its' 100th birthday this year, so may fit the bill. The hotel was renovated to five-star standard ten years ago and is pretty pricey. A room is likely to cost you around 300-400 US dollars a night. Less costly options close to the gate include the Melia Berlin Hotel, the NH Hotel Berlin-Mitte and the Dorint Sofitel Am Gendarmenmarkt Berlin Hotel.

Free drinks in Mauritius

QUESTION: We are going to Mauritius in December and have been offered the option of taking the 'fully inclusive" package for around R500 per day. We know that drinks and extras are expensive at resorts on the island, but are not sure whether this is a cost-effective option. Our package already includes breakfast and dinner. What do you think? - Gwynn Brink

ANSWER: This really depends on whether you intend drinking alcohol or not. If you are only going to have a light lunch and one or two soft drinks every day, then the package may not work for you. Alcohol is usually very expensive at Mauritian resorts, so the additional cost will make sense if you intend drinking wine with your meals and enjoying a few drinks and cocktails during the day. The package you are referring to includes a choice of restaurants for lunch, unlimited house wine during lunch and dinner, unlimited alcoholic drinks, wine and soft drinks from the bar from 10am-11pm, sandwiches and pancakes from 10am-4pm, your mini-bar replenished once a day and free coffee and tea in the room. The free mini-bar is a nice touch, because many all-inclusive packages only allow you free drinks taken at a specific bar (some don't even allow you to order your free drinks at the pool or on the beach). Based on past experience, I would say it is probably worthwhile accepting this package. It's a great feeling knowing that all your drinks and meals are paid for in advance. And you don't have to mentally calculate the exchange rate every time you think of ordering a drink or a snack!

Flights to Bali

QUESTION: We have been invited by friends to share a villa in Bali in November. Are there any direct flights? What cheap options do we have? - Thomas Black

ANSWER: There are no direct flights from South Africa to Denpasar (Bali). There are various options from Johannesburg: with Singapore Airlines via Singapore, via Kuala Lumpur with Malaysia Airline, via Bangkok with Thai Airways and via Doha with Qatar Airways. The prices are usually similar, but Qatar is the most likely to have specials at this time as this is a new service. The shortest flying time is with Singapore Airlines.

Packages to Rio Carnival

QUESTION: I have always wanted to go to Rio during the carnival period and intend going next year. Please can you give me any helpful websites, or reputable travel agencies that offer packages including travel and accommodation? - Jeremy Kali

ANSWER: The 2008 Carnival takes place from February 2-5. Most travel operators offer packages to Rio over this period, although they can be pretty pricey. Contact your travel agent to find out when the packages will become available and regularly check out the websites for Rennies Travel (www.renniestravel.com), Seekers Travel (www.seekers.com), Thompson Tours (www.thompsons.com) and Sure Travel (www.suretravel.com). You could also hedge your bets by reserving flights to Rio with SAA via Sao Paulo or on a European airline via Europe. As these flights sell out early, it pays to have seats in hand. Then you can try to get accommodation at a hotel or in private accommodation (rented apartments, bed and breakfasts, etc). As many of the packages available from South Africa do not include tickets to the main events or the parade in the Sambodrome, you should book seats well in advance. Tickets for the 2008 Samba Parade go on sale at the beginning of eptember. Prices for a grandstand seat range from 50-220 US dollars per day. You can book tickets through the website www.rio-carnival.net and have them delivered to your hotel in Rio when you arrive.

Tickets for Oktoberfest in Munich

QUESTION: We would like to attend the Oktoberfest during our visit to Munich this year. We will be there for the first three days of this year's festival, from 22-24 September 2007. Can you please tell us whether we need to buy tickets in advance (and how we do that) and whether there are facilities for children? - Lettie Beukes

ANSWER: You don't need to buy an overall ticket to the Oktoberfest. The festival consists of 14 massive tents, all with a particular speciality and atmosphere. With 100,000 seats available, you can usually secure entry if you arrive before the tents open at 10am. If you intend arriving later in the day, you should book your seats in one of the tents directly with the tent owners, who are listed on the Oktoberfest website (http://www.oktoberfest.de/en/). You can also buy a tourist package, which includes transport and entry to a tent. Children are welcome, but children under the age of six must leave tents at 8pm. The most popular tent for families is the Augustiner-Festhalle, which has special children's days.

Best hotel in Bali

QUESTION: I would like to treat my wife to a week in Bali for her birthday. I would like to book a villa with a private swimming pool in a small, exclusive resort setting, preferably on a beach and close to good restaurants. After spending many hours on the Internet and speaking to travel agents, the choice is mind-boggling and I am totally confused. Can you help? - Hans Woodburn

ANSWER: Experts on Bali agree that the choice is intimidating, but a name that keeps coming up is Samaya, a five-star villa property on the beach. If you had to choose the perfect location for beach house, this would be it. The 24-villa resort is adjacent to the very fashionable Ku De Ta bar, and a short walk to a wide range of restaurants in Seminyak village, the trendiest area on the island. If you can't get in at Samaya, you can try the Oberoi Hotel located nearby or one of the outstanding Aman resorts.

For something very different, stay at Hotel De Filosoof (Anna van den Vondelstraat 6; www.hotelfilosoof.nl; from 95 Euros). All the rooms feature different philosophical and cultural themes. For a funky and fun place to stay, Hotel V has 24 bright rooms - each with a lyric on the wall (Victorieplein 42, www.hotelv.nl, from 80 Euro single and Euro 120 double).

Budget airline to Stockholm

ANSWER: Ryanair flies between London Stansted and Stockholm Vasteras airport, while Sterling Airways flies between London Gatwick London and Stockholm Arlanda airport. I got a quote for a return booking in January for 55 Euros return, including taxes, but the price will depend on your dates and whether you want both flights with the same carrier. Try www.whichbudget.com or www.skyscanner.net for excellent listings of most budget airlines.

Seaplane to lunch in Sydney

QUESTION: My parents will be in Sydney, Australia for their 30th wedding anniversary and I would like to treat them to something special, such as a harbour cruise in the Sydney harbour, a flight over the city or dinner in a top restaurant. Do you have any suggestions? - Rose Kipland

ANSWER: A Sydney expert suggests that a gourmet lunch and seaplane package might fit the bill. Departing from the seaplane base at Rose Bay, the aircraft will fly them over the city's spectacular northern beaches, landing in the waterway at Pittwater. A courtesy car then transports them to Jonah's at Palm Beach, a stunning restaurant with magnificent 180-degree views of Whale Beach and the Pacific Ocean. Chef George Francisco has produced stunning modern Australian cuisine for celebrities such as Mick Jagger, Laurence Olivier and Anthony Hopkins, so your parents are bound to be impressed. On the return flight, the seaplane circles the harbour in front of the harbour bridge and the opera house. Packages start at around 479 Australian dollars (about R2800) per person.

A less adventurous (and cheaper) option would be a Sydney Harbour sunset dinner cruise. Enjoy canapes and a fine dinner on the MV Sydney 2000 with unlimited champagne, wine and beer from only 76 Australian dollars (R450) per person. Guaranteed window seats cost an additional 25 Aus dollars (R145) each.

Backpacking in Jordan

QUESTION: I would like to go backpacking in Jordan for a few days after an organised tour to Madaba and Petra. Could you recommend some locations on the Dead Sea that could provide me with some adventure? - Kevin York

ANSWER: Three areas you could visit are Wadi Rum, Wadi Mujib and Dana Nature Reserve. In Madi Rum you can base yourself at Beit Ali, an upmarket camp which costs around $35 with meals. Take a camel or jeep ride to locations used in the filming of "Lawrence of Arabia". You cannot stay overnight at Wadi Mujib, but you can travel from Amman on a day trip. A Bedouin guide is mandatory in this 100-square kilometre reserve on the Dead Sea. At the Dana Preserve, you can stay in a tent camp or guesthouse. Less adventurous travellers to the Dead Sea near Amman can stay at the Movenpick Resort and Spa or the Jordan Valley Marriott Resort and Spa.

What is an English breakfast?

QUESTION: What is the difference between an English breakfast and an American breakfast? - Sue Ranger

ANSWER: I have tried to find exact definitions, but it appears that these terms are used very loosely. Basically, you can expect to receive eggs, bacon, toast and coffee or tea with both breakfasts. Besides that, it depends on the chef's interpretation. English breakfasts often come with sausages, baked beans and mushrooms. You may even get black pudding, a sausage which is made by cooking blood with a filler until it congeals. An American breakfast is likely to include small potato cakes known as hash-browns and maybe a pancake with maple syrup. However, in most large hotels, both English and American breakfasts are likely to offer a full range of choices for breakfast, which would include fruit, pastries and cereals.

Overnight in Macau

QUESTION: I am attending a conference in Hong Kong in December and would like to spend a night or two at one of the casino resorts in Macau. Any helpful advice would be appreciated. - Robert Harris

ANSWER: You don't have to stay on Macau, as there is a regular and very efficient 24-hour hydrofoil ferry service from Hong Kong 24 hours a day. A one-way ticket for the 70km trip costs around R140-R170. However, if you do want to stay over, try to get a room at the two new casino resorts that are causing waves internationally; the glitzy Wynn Macau or the sparkling new 3000-suite Venetian. Their massive casinos have helped propel Macau past Las Vegas as the world's top gambling destination, based on gambling spend. If you cannot get into the two new resort hotels, try the old faithfuls such as the Mandarin Oriental or the Lisboa. If you want to get away from the very busy casino area, opt for Taipa island, which is much quieter and more suited to families.

Tour of Hollywood homes

QUESTION: I am visiting Los Angeles in February and would like to go on one of those tours that shows you where the superstars live. Could you suggest a specific tour company and give me contact details and prices? Thank you. - Sandy Marais.

ANSWER: One of the most popular companies offering these trips is Starline Tours, which takes you past at least 40 homes of famous movie stars, along Sunset Strip and down Rodeo Drive. You are transported in a small van with big windows, which means you can travel down small lanes and get a better view. Among the homes you may visit include those of Tom Cruise, Ozzie Ozbourne, Madonna, Jackie Chan, Nicolas Cage, Sean Connery and Angelina Jolie. You may also pass the former estates of such legends as Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Tours cost from US$32 per person and can be booked directly on the company's website (www. starlinetours.com).

Stay over on a farm

QUESTION: We will be driving from Gauteng to the Eastern Cape over the Christmas holiday and are looking for stopover accommodation in Colesberg. Do you have any suggestions? - Graham Johns.

ANSWER: Some of the best accommodation in Colesberg is located on farms outside of the town. A perennial favourite is the Kuilfontein Stable Cottages, which is situated on the N1 12 kilometres south of Colesberg. This oasis offers dinner, bed and breakfast in very comfortable rooms on a traditional Karoo farm. (Tel: 051-753 1364) Or you could try the Van Zylsvlei Bed and Breakfast, which is situated 6km from Colesberg on the Philippolis road. Dinner and breakfast is available. (Tel: 051-753 0589) In the town, you can try Traveller's Joy, located in a restored residence built in 1840 (Tel: 051-753 1160), or The Barracks, a four-star guest house. (Tel: 051- 753 2286). On the outskirts of town is the very popular three-star Merino Inn Hotel. (Tel 051-753 0781). Go to www.wheretostay.co.za for listings of a wide range of accommodation.

Cruise to Vietnam

QUESTION: I would like to go on a cruise which takes in Hong Kong, China and Vietnam. Do you know of a company which offers this routing? - Jannie Els

ANSWER: The Singapore-based Star Cruises offers a great trip which leaves from Singapore and visits Hong Kong harbour, Halong Bay in Vietnam and two destinations in China, Xiamen and the island resort of Sanya. Your trip would be aboard the Superstar Virgo, which has two swimming pools, jacuzzis, a golf driving range and putting zone, a jogging track and a casino. There are eight restaurants, a theatre, cinema and dance lounge.A package from South Africa, including flights and an upgrade to an oceanview stateroom should cost you around R13,000. The company also has other voyages which include Thailand and Malaysia.

Maldives or Mauritius?

QUESTION: I have come to value your opinion, so please help my family out. We cannot decide between a holiday in Maldives or Mauritius early next year. We would spend most of our time on the beach, but we want a hassle-free experience. What do you say? - Erna Grobler

ANSWER: Both are fabulous destinations, but there are two things to consider. The first is travelling time. Mauritius is only a few hours flying time away, and you should be at your hotel within 30 minutes of leaving the airport. Getting to Maldives means a much longer flight, usually via another country, and you often have to catch a speedboat or plane to get to your resort. Secondly, if you only intend staying within the resort, relaxing at the pool and on the beach, and eating at the hotel restaurants, then either destination should be fine. However, if you prefer trying out restaurants outside the resort and doing some sightseeing, then Mauritius is a better bet. I would say that you would probably find Maldives more exciting and exotic, and you won't bump into as many South Africans as you will in Mauritius. If you don't mind the long flight and living in splendid isolation, why not give it a try?

Hire an apartment in London

QUESTION: My family will be travelling to London for the last two weeks in December. As my children are over 18, we require accommodation for four adults. Hotels are generally quite expensive and I would like to know if apartments or flats are a viable option. Please recommend suitable accommodation or any websites that may offer me some options. - Mohini Murugasen

ANSWER: Hiring an apartment in London is a great option. In most cases, the standard of accommodation offered is vastly superior to hotels in the same price bracket. One of the most reliable websites offering private apartments for weekly rental is www.holidaylettings.co.uk, which has a vast selection on offer. Some have surcharges for the Christmas/New Year period, but you should be able to find a nice two-bedroom apartment from around 80 British pounds per night. You can also opt for real luxury in a prime area from around 150 British pounds per night. In any case, it will be cheaper than a hotel. During a quick search, I found a lovely two-bedroom flat near Camden Market for 545 GBP per week, which comes with wooden floors, internet access and a washing machine. Other websites you can try are www.holiday-rentals.co.uk and www.ownersdirect.co.uk. If you don't mind staying a little way out of central London, you can rent a two or three-bedroom house for as little as 300-400 GBP per week.

Public transport in Mumbai

QUESTION: We will be in Mumbai in December. Transport from the airport is provided, but I am concerned about transportation around the city. Is public transport reliable? Do you have any tips? - Sylvie Naidoo

ANSWER: You won't have any difficulty locating auto-rickshaws and taxis on the city's main streets, but you could have a problem getting them to use the meter. Insist - and check what you should pay on the fare chart, which the driver has to produce when asked. There is a surcharge from midnight to 6am. For tourists, it is often far less bother to opt for the blue and white "cool cabs", which have air conditioning and are slightly more expensive than other taxis. The drivers will usually use the meters without being asked or you can negotiate an hourly fare with the driver (around US$25 for four hours or US$40 for the whole day). If you are commuting in and out of the city, you can use the air conditioned bus service run by BEST. You can buy a BEST Day Pass for 40 Rupees (around R7), which entitles you to unlimited travel. If you are concerned about negotiating transport in the city, you can approach a travel agency and get them to arrange a car and driver to work for you throughout your stay. Let the agency haggle on your behalf and you will probably end up with a reasonable deal.

Stylish digs in Buenos Aires

QUESTION: My wife and I are going on holiday to Buenos Aires. We do not want to stay in a big chain hotel, which is what many travel agents are offering us. Could you recommend some small stylish boutique hotels or guest houses where we can get a more intimate experience of the city? - John De Villiers.

ANSWER: You best bet would be the very chic Bo Bo Hotel. It aims to be bourgeois, yet bohemian: hence the name. Housed in a 1920's mansion a tree-lined block in Palermo Viejo, the hotel has seven individually designed rooms. Book the Argentinian suite, which has its own jacuzzi and street-facing balcony. Be sure to dine in the hotel's ground-floor restaurant, run by leading chef Nicolas Tomasseli. (www.bobohotel.com) A great alternative is The Cocker, a five-room guesthouse located in a mansion in the San Telmo district. Wood floors, soaring ceilings, a spiral staircase and a grand piano give it a theatrical feel. Some rooms have four-poster beds and private terraces. (www.thecocker.com) Another charming hotel is Five Cool Rooms, which actually has 16 superb rooms graded by size. It's best feature is a large rooftop terrace with a jacuzzi and lovely views. (www.fivebuenosaires.com)

Camping near Durban

QUESTION: I will be meeting friends from the UK in Durban next month and would like to take camping for a night, preferably in a game reserve environment. As we have a very limited time together, can you recommend somewhere within an hour's drive of the city. - Jake Green

ANSWER: A great spot is Shongweni Dam and Game Reserve, which is only 30 minutes drive from Durban. A national heritage site, it has great scenery, with waterfalls, forests and steep cliffs. The reserve is home to rhino, buffalo, giraffe, waterbuck, wildebeest, warthog and a variety of birds. You can either camp overnight or stay in the Mkangoma Bush Lodge. A good choice to impress your friends would be one of the tented camps, which are built on stilts and sit right on the water's edge. Other dams which offer campsites and some game or bird viewing are the Albert Falls Dam, the Hazelmere Dam and the Inanda Dam. For bookings, contact Msinsi Resorts and Game Reserves (Tel: 031-765 7724).

Budget flight to Liverpool

QUESTION: I am attending a conference in Barcelona early next year. I have a few days to spare and would dearly love to visit my sister, who lives in Liverpool. Are there any direct flights from Barcelona to Liverpool or Manchester, preferably with one of the budget airlines? - Alec Graaff

ANSWER: Yes, easyJet has a regular, scheduled service between Barcelona and Liverpool. A return ticket in January should cost you around 45 Euros. If you would prefer to fly to Manchester, then try Monarch (www.flymonarch.com) which has regular flights between the two cities.

New York for boys

QUESTION: I will be on holiday in New York with my two boys and would like some ideas of what to do to keep them entertained. Any suggestions welcome- Jane Ridgate

ANSWER: There's plenty to do. First of all, there's Central Park, which could keep them entertained for days. Don't miss the zoo, which is great for children. A highlight is the polar bear pool, where they can watch the bears swimming and diving behind a glass wall. A great attraction for younger kids is the fabulous old-style carousel. Your boys will love the South Street Seaport, where they can tour renovated ships and pretend they are sailing the high seas. Another big hit should be the Sony IMAX 3-D Theatre on Broadway, with a huge screen which rises a few storeys. Put on goggles on go on a wild 3-D adventure. If you have a few dollars to burn, risk letting them loose in the FAO Schwarz store on Fifth Avenue, which is regarded as the world's greatest toy store. You'll discover even you are captivated by the life-size animals, kid-sized sports cars and amazing electronic goods on display. Go to the viewing deck on the 86th floor of the Empire State Building, but stop in at the New York Skyride, which is located on the second floor. Experience the simulated flight over the city, narrated by Kevin Bacon. Finally, don't miss the American Museum of Natural History, where you can visit the famous dinosaur halls and the most technologically advanced space show in the world.

Nile cruise fears

QUESTION: My sister in England is taking my husband and I on a holiday to Egypt, which includes a cruise on the Nile from Luxor to Aswan. We are not that keen on the cruise aspect of the trip and have heard some horror stories of dirty, cramped boats masquerading as five-star cruisers. We are booked on the Mövenpick M/S Royal Lotus. Should we jump ship now? We would welcome any information.- Rene Mackintosh

ANSWER: Despite the many stories, some of them urban legends, most of the Nile cruisers are clean and well-managed - and represent excellent value for money. You need have no qualms about this Movenpick cruiser. It is one of the best, with luxurious rooms, great dining and all the facilities you might expect. You should have a marvellous trip - it would be a shame to miss out.

Do we still need traveller's cheques?

QUESTION: I always take some foreign currency and traveller's cheques with me when travelling overseas, but find that I use my credit cards and have less and less use for the traveller's cheques. Do you think it is still necessary to carry them? - Mike Labuschagne

ANSWER: It is no longer vital when visiting most countries, especially if you have two different brands of credit card (for example, a Master and a Visa card). However, you might still want to take traveller's cheques to some destinations, such as those where there are few ATM's and where credit cards are not widely accepted. There are also countries and regions where the rate of card fraud is exceptionally high and it is advisable to use cheques or cash there. You don't want to have to cancel your cards midway through your trip! My recommendation would be to carry a limited number of traveller's cheques as a safety fund. Hide them away from your other money, where you can locate them in a time of need. You can't lose anything by taking some along, so why not?

The high cost of hotels in Paris

QUESTION; Since watching the Rugby World Cup, we have set our hearts on visiting Paris. We hope to use my husband's air miles to get one free ticket, but would like some idea of how much we would have to pay for a reasonable three-star hotel in a central area or close to the metro. We would probably consider travelling in February next year. - Sue Smit

ANSWER: Hotels in Paris are not cheap. Your best bet is to book through one of the discount hotel websites or try a few local travel agents to see what they can offer you. Overall, though, you should be able to get a three-star hotel for 60-80 Euros in outlying areas. An example here would be the three-star Ibis Porte D'Italie Hotel Paris, located in the Rue Du Val De Marne, costs from 62-82 Euros from discount websites. These prices include taxes and service charges (be sure to check when booking any hotel, as they can add substantially to the cost). Obviously, prices closer to the centre are more expensive and you can count on paying around 100 Euros per room. For example, the three-star Mericourt Hotel located in Le Marais (between Republique and the Bastille Opera) will cost you from 70-100 Euros. A good hotel in a prime location, such as the Novotel Les Halles, will set you back around 200 Euro per night. For your interest, if you decided to stay at the Ritz, one of the city's classiest five-star hotels, expect to pay at least 600 Euros a night.

The festive season in Barcelona

QUESTION: We will be in Barcelona between Christmas and New Year with my two sons, aged 17 and 20. Will we run into problems with restaurants, attractions and museums being closed? - Robin Cutler-Levine

ANSWER: Barcelona is a good place to be at this time of the year, as it should not be too busy with tourists. And, unlike Madrid, it doesn't really shut down. A number of shops could be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. However, most restaurants that cater for tourists, are likely to remain open. The website www.barcelona-tourist-guide.com has compiled a list of restaurants they confirmed will be open on Christmas and Boxing Day. Public transport should be running normally.

There is no rule of thumb with regard to attractions in the city. The La Sagrada Familia Cathedral will be open in the mornings. However, the Picasso Museum is closed on all three days. The best advice is to check each attraction before you visit, as late decisions to open or close these facilities may be taken on the spur of the moment. In the week leading up to Christmas you'll find a large Christmas market of handmade items in Placa de la Seu and Placa Nova, and there are many Midnight Masses on Christmas Eve, one of the best being the candlelight service and boys choir at the beautiful Benedictine abbey Santa Maria de Montserrat, about 25 miles outside the city.

A cheap hotel near Schiphol

QUESTION: We will be passing through Amsterdam en route to Canada and need to stay over at a hotel near Schiphol Airport. We do not want to pay for the big five-star hotels there, like the Sheraton. Do you know of any reasonably-priced three star hotels close to the airport? - Meg James

ANSWER: A good budget choice is the Ibis Amsterdam Airport, which is located 2,7kms from the airport. The hotel offers clean, modern rooms and a free shuttle service to and from Schiphol (www.accor.com). There are a number of other three-star hotels within four kilometres of the airport. These include the De Herbergh van Badhoevedorp (3kms), Best Western Amsterdam Airport Hotel (3,3kms) and Hotel Chariot (3,5kms).

Business class seats are not the same

QUESTION: Most airlines offer lie-flat beds in business class, but in the past I have been disappointed to find that the beds are not completely flat, but lie at an angle (which I find very uncomfortable). How can be sure that when I pay through my nose for a lie-flat bed it is going to be flat? - Heiko Van Rooyen

ANSWER: You are quite correct. Many of the 'lie-flat beds" on airlines today are placed at an angle, as few airlines are prepared to give up the additional space needed for a 180-degree flat bed. Among the airlines who do offer completely flat beds in business class are South African Airways, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Etihad Airwaysand Kenya Airways. However, you should always check that this is the case on the specific aircraft used on the route. The best way to find out what to expect is to visit independent Internet sites that provide details of the size and angle of aircraft seating on specific airlines. One of the best websites is www.flatseats.com, which includes customer reviews of seating. You can also try www.seatguru.com for seating plans on airlines, pointing out the good and bad seats in every class.

Is health insurance worthwhile?

QUESTION: My 20-year-old son is going travelling in Europe for two months. My husband and I are insisting that he take health insurance for the trip. He has been quoted around R500, but he feels it is a waste of money and he would rather use the funds for travel costs. What is your view? - Joanne Thompson

ANSWER: I can understand your son's feelings, but you are wise to insist on insurance coverage. Anything can happen, especially if he is backpacking. There are plenty of horror stories of young travellers incurring massive medical bills on foreign escapades. Once he is in Europe, I am sure he will realise that the equivalent of only 50 Euros is a small price to pay. A dental mishap could cost him more than that in medical bills. If he remains sceptical, perhaps you could give him insurance cover as a farewell gift. It may be worth it for your own peace of mind.

Glamour on the Garden Route

QUESTION: American friends have asked us to recommend a boutique hotel in the Plett/Knysna area on the Garden Route where they can spend a week relaxing during a visit to SA. They enjoy swimming, walking and playing golf. Any suggestions? - Else Rossouw

ANSWERS: There is a wide choice of hotels that fit the bill. Wherever they stay, they will never be too far from a beach or a golf course. My top choices would be: Hunters Country House outside Plettenberg Bay (exquisite boutique hotel in a forest), The Plettenberg Hotel in Plettenberg Bay (spectacular sea and mountain views), the Fancourt Hotel and Golf Estate at George (exclusivity and privacy in a world-class estate) and the Pezula Resort Hotel and Spa at Knysna (golf and health spa haven overlooking the lake). If they are adventurous, you could recommend the fabulous Tsala Treetop Lodge, an eco-friendly forest lodge.

Is Laos safe?

QUESTION: I would like to visit Laos, specifically Luang Prabang. Is it safe to visit the country and which is the easiest way to get there? - Mike Nel

ANSWER: Laos is a growing tourist destination and the main centres are very safe to visit. The best way to get there would be to fly to Bangkok and on to Vientiane with Thai Airways. If you prefer to fly directly to Luang Prabang, there are scheduled daily flights from Bangkok on Bangkok Airways. It is best to fly between Vientiane and Luang Prabang, as ground transportation can be tiring and uncomfortable.

Tips for teenage son in Rome

QUESTION: Do you have suggestions that would interest my 17 year-old teenage son in and around Rome in Italy. - Joy Lyner

ANSWER: I am sure he will be interested in the major tourist attractions like the Vatican, the Coliseum, the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon. However, to find out where young travellers are going, he could hang out on the Campo de' Fiori, a piazza ringed by cafes and bars. Here he should be able to meet up with like-minded tourists. Some of the things that may interest him include Rome's only amusement park, LunEUR, at the Via delle Tre Fontane and the Capuchin crypt, a gory exhibition of sculptures made from the bones of 4,000 friars buried at the Santa Maria della Concezione Church (Via Veneto 27). To meet Roman teenagers, he can hang out on Rome's own Rodeo Drive, Via dei Condotti, and on the Spanish Steps.

Hotel near Lisbon Airport

QUESTION: My wife gets the heebi-jeebis the day we travel – she is petrified that we will be late for our flight as a result of a traffic jam or other problems. To help her, and me, is there a fairly inexpensive hotel on or near the Lisbon airport as our flight departs at 7am on January 14. - Stefaans Olivier

ANSWER: I could not find a hotel at the terminal, but the Lisbon city centre hotels are not far from the airport. The closest hotel I could find was the three-star Hotel Tivoli Tejo, which is only two kilometres away. A room should cost you about 100 Euros. For good value, you could try the three-star Roma Hotel, which is four kilometres from the airport. A room here should cost you about 65 Euros. The Holiday Inn Lisbon is three kilometres from the airport and the rate is around 120 Euros a night. You can check rates (and distances) on discount websites like www.hotel.com or with a travel agent.

Poodle on the plane

QUESTION: I would like to take my poodle with me on an SAA flight to Cape Town. My agent says I need to send the animal as cargo, but I would prefer to have her travel with me. Is this possible? - Sally Brian

ANSWER: Only guide dogs for the blind or deaf are permitted to travel in the cabin of an SAA aircraft. However, you can transport your pet as checked baggage or cargo on the same flight you are taking.

Is Cape Town still affordable?

QUESTION: Could you kindly advise where I can find affordable but safe and tidy accomodation at Blouberg Strand or one of the more remote beaches in Cape Town. I want to be right on the beach, but it does not have to be fancy. Is it still possible for us South Africans to have a holiday in our own country that we can afford? - Linette Lintvelt

ANSWER: Accommodation has become expensive, but it is possible to find reasonable places that are not aimed at the international market. However, you are unlikely to find a bargain right on the beachfront - perhaps a few roads back. For listings of holiday places to let, check www.sleeping-out.co.za and www.sa-venues.co.za on the Internet. It is worthwhile keeping an eye on the classified adverts of the Cape newspapers, especially the smaller ones. (Ask someone in Cape Town to do this for you if you cannot get the newspaper). You can also telephone property agents listed in the yellow pages, as they may rent out holiday flats or houses. The other alternative is to place your own advertisement in one of the newspapers, stating how much you are prepared to pay.

SAA has new charge

QUESTION: I was staggered when I heard that it would cost me an extra R200 to have my SAA air ticket issued at an SAA office or the airport. It seems an outrageous service fee for what is only a domestic ticket between Johannesburg and Durban. How can I avoid paying this? - Anne Bernard

ANSWER: Yes, the service fee was introduced in August this year. The charge at the airport is R200 for a domestic ticket and R500 for an international ticket. The fee at an SAA city office is R200 per ticket. While it may seem expensive, most travel agencies also charge a service fee these days. You can avoid paying this fee by booking online at the SAA website and paying with a credit card.

Weekend at Victoria Falls

QUESTION: I would like to visit Victoria Falls. What is the best time of the year to go there and how do I get there? Also, please recommend hotels to stay there. I have been told that the Zimbabwean side is the more beautiful, but the Zambian side is safer and better maintained. What do you recommend? - Clive Mabuya

ANSWER: The best time to visit Victoria Falls is between September and November. The water flow is strongest during March and April, but the spray mist can make them difficult to see. At other times it can be very humid. It is best to fly to the region, either to Victoria Falls Airport in Zimbabwe or Livingstone Airport in Zambia. There are plenty of good hotels available at excellent rates to southern African travellers, but it is probably worthwhile buying a fly-hotel package from a travel company such as Flight Centre, Seekers, Thompsons or Holiday Tours. They use very good hotels such as Elephant Hills, the Kingdom or the Victoria Falls Hotel in Zimbabwe and Sun International's two spectacular resorts on the Zambian side. Neither side is better than the other, so perhaps you should decide on the basis of the deals you can find.

Getting to Australia

QUESTION: We hope to attend a family wedding in Australia next year and are looking to find the cheapest airfare. I know that the direct flights on SAA and Qantas are pretty expensive. We don't mind stopover flights, as long as the price is right. Which other airlines can you recommend? - Diane Davis

ANSWER: Besides the direct flights you mention, there are two major routings - via the Middle East or the Far East. You can fly Cathay Pacific Airways via Hong Kong, Singapore Airlines via Singapore, Thai Airways via Bangkok or Malaysian Airlines via Kuala Lumpur. If you prefer the Middle East routing, the airlines to try are Emirates via Dubai, Qatar Airways via Doha and Etihad Airlines via Abu Dhabi. Book as early as possible to take advantage of the heavily discounted fares, which are limited, but make sure you are fully aware of the conditions relating to cancellation and flight changes.

Budget rooms in Dubai

QUESTION: Earlier this year my husband flew Air Emirates to England and despite the long wait in the wee hours, was most impressed with this airline. We are wondering if you can recommend any cheap (but not nasty!) hotels, B& B’s etc, where one can stay in Dubai for a few days, as we’d like to break our journey there en route to England next year. - Moira MacMurray

ANSWER: If you are flying on Emirates, you can use the airline website to book hotels at reasonable rates. Two-night packages are available for as little as US$68 per person. If you want to book a hotel independently, you can try one of the international hotel discount websites. I checked www.directrooms.com and the best offer I could find was a double room in a two-star hotel for 66 US dollars, including taxes and breakfast. A number of hotels are available for under 100 US dollars. Another website, www.hoteltravel.com, offered a three-star hotel, the Residence Deira By Le Meridien Hotel, from 95 US dollars. You can find a number of guest houses in all price brackets at the website www.travel-library.com.

To buy a Wildcard or not

QUESTION: My wife and I are thinking about buying a Wildcard for the national parks. Do you think the cost is justified and whether it represents value for money? - Etienne Le Roux

ANSWER: The general consensus among cardholders that I have spoken to is that it is definitely worthwhile. However, it really depends on how often you visit the national parks in any one year. This smart card system, which is administered by Infinity, has a host of other privileges, but the major benefit is free entry to parks and the knowledge that you are contributing to South Africa's wildlife heritage. At less than R500 for a family membership, most lovers of the wild would soon recoup the cost. You need to be aware that there are different levels of membership that may restrict which parks which allow you free entrance (divided geographically). A card for "all clusters" allows you to visit all national parks and partner parks, while there are membership levels that that restrict you to the Bushveld, the Cape Parks, Swazi parks and KZN Ezemvelo parks.

Where do air taxes go?

QUESTION: Will you please tell me and thousands of other air travellers, where the air taxes go to? I have noticed that in some cases, they are more than 50% on top of the flight costs. - Larry Edmonds

ANSWER: You are quite correct that additional taxes do form a major part of the cost of airline tickets these days. The biggest cost is airport taxes, which go to the airport management. Then there is the government tax charge (usually VAT these days), which goes to the government of the country where the ticket was bought. Other charges include insurance surcharges and fuel surcharges, which go to the airlines. Some airlines (especially budget carriers) also levy an administration fee or booking fee, which is also added on to the cost of the ticket. On top of that, the travel agent or airline booking office sometimes charges a fee. All these costs certainly add up. The final cost can vary from day to day, as some fees are charged in US dollars or Euros and depend on the currency exchange rates.

Romance in Rome

QUESTION: Can you recommend a romantic boutique hotel in Rome? I am spending a weekend there with my girlfriend, who is studying in London, and feel the need to impress. - Rowan Hills

ANSWER: You have plenty of choice in stylish Rome, but the trendiest option may well be the Hotel Art. (www.hotelart.it) Located close to the Spanish Steps, it was built in a historic palazzo which used to house a school. Dine in the former chapel and enjoy cocktails mixed in front of the altar. If her penchant is for modern makeovers of iconic buildings, you will be on to a winner. For a more intimate experience, try the Casa Howard nearby (www.casahoward.com). Two converted flats provide five luxurious, if rather eccentric, rooms, while a Turkish bath is an unexpected bonus. For an African feel, book the black and white Zebra Room. For a larger, although decidedly avant-garde establishment, try the Ripa Hotel (www.ripahotel.com) With its simple, minimalist style it stands out in the prime Trastevere district, which is close to the Vatican and other historical landmarks.

Riding on the beach

QUESTION: My daughter would love to go horse-riding on Noordhoek's Long Beach while we are on holiday in the Cape. Could you provide me with contact details for riding schools or other operators. - Rodney Killian.

ANSWER: Horse-riding is provided by number of stable owners in the area. Among the most reputable are Sleepy Hollow in Noordhoek (telephone 021-7892341), The Dunes in Noordhoek (tel: 021-7891723) and Imhoffs Beach Rides in Kommetjie (tel: 021-7831474).

The last unspoilt place on earth

QUESTION: I would love to visit Bhutan. I read a very interesting article which described it as one of the last unspoilt tourist destinations on earth. However, I have no idea about how to start organising a trip. Can you assist? - Rodney Harrington

ANSWER: You will need a visa and travel permit, which can be organised through an approved travel agent. If you book hotel accommodation, the management will assist in expediting the approval process. Places to stay include the magnificent 24-room Amankora, which is part of the Aman chain (www.amanresorts.com) and Uma Paro, a trendy lodge (www.uma.como.bz). For a local feel, you can try the Zhiwa Ling hotel (www.zhiwaling.com). Bhutan's only airport is located in Paro and the only scheduled carrier flying into the country is Druk Air, which has services from Bangkok (via Kolkata) and Delhi (via Kathmandu).

Guided tours of MoMA

QUESTION: During a visit to New York, I would like to experience the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). However, as I am no art expert, I wouldn't like to do it unaccompanied. Are there guided tours or is there a tour guide service available for New York galleries? - Linky Turnbull

ANSWER: There are a host of options to ensure you get the opportunity to have the best possible visit. Firstly, you could join a one-hour guided tour where you will be in a group of up to 50 people. The cost is US$27 including admission fee. However, the best bet might be for you to request a personal tour. This is arranged by MoMA's group services department, allowing you to view the museum's full collection or any of the special exhibitions. If you really want an exclusive experience, you can ask to do a private tour before or after the museum opens to the public. These one-hour tours, which are conducted by a museum lecturer, also take place on Tuesday afternoons, when the museum is closed to the public. Call the MoMA's group services department (212-708-9685) to inquire about rates and availability.

Business visa for Pakistan

QUESTION: I am due to visit Pakistan on business. I was first told that South African passport holders can obtain a 30-day visa on arrival, but I have now heard that I need to obtain a three-month visa in advance. What should I do? - Ken De Villiers

ANSWER: As a business traveller, you are entitled to a 30-day visa on arrival, but you need to provide proof of your status in the form of a letter from the SA Chamber of Commerce or an invitation from a registered Pakistani company or a letter of recommendation from a trade attache at one of the Pakistani missions abroad. However, any one of these documents would get you a three-month multiple entry visa valid for five years when you apply in advance at a Pakistani mission abroad, so this may be the safest and easiest bet.

Ferry from Buenos Aires

QUESTION: I have booked a one-week trip to Buenos Aires next year and I have heard that it is possible to take a boat or ferry across the Rio de la Plata to Montevideo in Uruguay. Can one do this as a day trip? Do I need a visa and how much would it cost? - Bernice Day

ANSWER: There is a regular ferry service between the two cities that takes around three hours, so a return trip is certainly possible. SA passport holders do not need a visa. Two of the most reliable companies are Buquebus (tel: 4316-6500) and Ferrytur (tel: 4315-6800), both located in Avenue Cordoba. Buquebus offers a one-day package that includes a round-trip ticket on the the fast ferry (3 hours), lunch at a port restaurant, a city tour, a visit to a shopping mall and in/out transfers. The cost is around 450 Argentinian pesos (about R970). There are cheaper trips to Colonia del Sacramento, which offer a round-trip ticket, lunch and tours for only 150 Argentinian Pesos (about R330). Uruguay's oldest city, Colonia's old district is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a fascinating place to visit.

Best seat for long legs

QUESTION: I am very tall and struggle to sit in an economy aircraft seat, but cannot afford to upgrade to business class on international flights. I am due to fly to London with SAA and would like to find out which seats I should aim for. Can you help? - Graham Whittaker

ANSWER: If you used a travel agent to buy the ticket, they should be able to look up which aircraft is being used for the flight and pre-book one of the 'exit row' seats, which have the most legroom. If you bought the ticket directly from SAA, visit one of their city offices with the same request. Although many passengers make the same demand, if you are visibly taller than average you should have a better chance of getting one of these prized seats. For a general idea of which seats are best on various aircraft, have a look at the www.seatguru.com website.

Cheap theatre tickets in London

QUESTION: I have had bad experiences trying to book discounted tickets for London theatre shows. Can you tell me more about the official half-price kiosk in Leicester Square, the one place that I feel won’t rip me off. – Diane de Waal

ANSWER: Known as the tkts booth these days (it used to be called the half-price kiosk), it is the only discounted ticket outlet operated by the Society of London Theatre, the industry body that represents London theatres. So you can be sure that a ticket bought here is at the discount rate advertised and not a fake. The only downside is that you cannot be guaranteed tickets to any one show (there are fewer tickets for the mega-hits) and you may have to queue for some time. Tickets are available on the day of the performance, usually at half price, but sometimes for a lesser discount. A £2.50 booking fee per ticket is included in the cost of the ticket, so there are no hidden extras.

Visit the Von Trapp family lodge

QUESTION: We will be in New York in February. We are great fans of the film, The Sound of Music, and believe there is a lodge dedicated to the Von Trapp family in Vermont. It seems an unlikely location, but we would like to find out more information about the lodge and would appreciate details on how to get there. - Alice Thompson

ANSWER: The Trapp Family Lodge is located in Stowe, Vermont. The Von Trapps ended up in the state of Vermont after fleeing Nazi rule and established a ski lodge in their new home in 1950. A new Austrian-style lodge was opened in 1983 which has 93 rooms. Additional rooms and 100 guesthouses have since been added. It attracts thousands of the "Sound of Music" fans each year and hosts part of the Vermont Mozart Festival. The easiest way to get there is to fly from New York (Newark or JFK) to Burlington International Airport, which is a 45-minute drive to Stowe. For further details and bookings check out the lodge website (www.trappfamily.com).

Boutique hotels in Tel Aviv

QUESTION: My husband and I are hoping to visit Israel in March. We would prefer not to stay in one of the big international tourist hotels in Tel Aviv and are hoping to find a more intimate boutique property. As it's our first visit to the Holy Land, we would like it to be special. We would appreciate any suggestions. - Anthea Levin

ANSWER: You won't have problems finding a boutique hotel in Tel Aviv. One of the most interesting is Hotel Cinema (Zamenhoff Street, Tel 972 3 520 7100), which is located in a converted movie theatre. Meticulously restored rooms with all the modcons contrast with original bric-a-brac from its past, such as movie posters, film projectors and theatre chairs. Well located in Dizengoff Circle.

Even more exclusive is the Nina Cafe Suites Hotel (Shabazi Street, Tel 972 3 516 1767) is a five-suite boutique hotel in the historic Neve Tzedek quarter. Decor is inspired by the owner's love of Paris, and suites have custom-designed furniture, antique lamps and slate-walled bathrooms. Book the duplex garden suite for your own outdoor area. Meals are delivered from the Nina Cafe across the street.

If you're interested in the Chinese tradition of Feng Shui, you'll be in your element at the Hotel De La Mer (Nes Tziona Street, Tel 972 3 5100011). A restored Bauhaus exterior conceals stunning interior design based on the principles of Feng Shui. The hotel overlooks the Mediterranean and the city's golden beaches and guests can while away their time being pampered in massage rooms or lounging on the sun bathing deck. Coffee and tea is offered free in the lobby 24 hours a day.

Finally, you could try the Tel Aviv Hotel Vital (Weizman Street, Tel 972-3-7770000), a super-efficient boutique hotel favoured by business travellers. It offers great service and an elegant atmosphere, but its biggest asset is its location within walking distance of the Opera House, Tel Aviv Museum, Azriely shopping centre and many fine restaurants. To top it all, a private elevator whisks guests directly to the new shopping center and cafes at the Weitzman Center, the cultural and business centre of the city.

Self-catering options in Mauritius

QUESTION: We are struggling to find reasonably priced accommodation in Mauritius. Hotels seem very expensive, so we are considering self-catering accommodation. Can you help? - Daphne Greyling

ANSWER: Luxury hotels in Mauritius are expensive. They are best booked as part of a flight-hotel package from South Africa. However, you can find self-catering accommodation that is affordable. One of the best ways to do this is to check websites offering accommodation, so that you can view photographs of the property and check the rates before making enquiries. A good website is www.holidaylettings.co.uk, which lists a number of apartments and villas at weekly rates. One of the value-for-money offers I found on this site was for an apartment sleeping four at Pointe Aux Canonniers from 99 British pounds sterling (around R1400) per week. The apartment is only 100 metres from Grand Baie and consists of two bedrooms and is equipped with a kitchen, washing machine, TV and telephone.

Another site worth checking is www.hostelbookers.com, which does not only offer hostel rooms. It lists a number of affordable apartments and villas. One of the offers that caught my eye was for an apartment in the Flic en Flac area. The self-catering studio consists of a double bedroom with fully equipped kitchenette, air-conditioning, satellite TV and safety box. Named Cool Studio, it is set in a garden with a swimming pool, tennis court, squash court and a fitness centre. It is close to shopping, restaurants and the beach. The rate for the apartment is 30 Euros (around R300) per day.

You could also check www.vacationvillas.net, a website which offers apartments and villas around the island. A nice apartment close to the beach works out at around 70 US dollars (R480) per day, while a luxurious villa with swimming pool will cost you from 130-180 US dollars (R900-R1250) per day. Considering this is for the whole villa, it is still a fraction of the price you would pay for a comparable hotel.

Wait-list for space trip

QUESTION: I dream of taking a flight into space. As I will never make it as an astronaut, I would love to be one of the first to fly on the commercial spacecraft being built by Richard Branson. I believe bookings are already being taken. How do I get my name on the list? - James White

ANSWER: It is easy to make a booking - come up with a deposit of at least 20,000 US dollars! (around R140,000) Seriously, though, you can reserve a seat on the first flights of the Virgin Galactic, which is presently being built at the project headquarters in the Mojave Desert in California. Bookings have been taken since mid-2005 and the first flight is already fully booked. A ticket is expected to cost around 200,000 US dollars (R1,4 million). That's a hefty price tag, but it's still a pittance compared to the 20 million US dollars Mark Shuttleworth paid to hitch a ride on the Russian Soyuz spaceship. There is no set departure date for the inaugural flight of the Branson flight, but go to www.virgingalactic.com for further information and to make your reservation.

Overnight at Heathrow

QUESTION: I have a one-night stopover at Heathrow Airport, London on a return trip from the United States in March. Would it be cheaper to stay in an airport hotel or one in the city? What would a good airport hotel cost? - Graeme Marshall

ANSWER: Hotels around Heathrow generally offer great value for money compared to their city centre counterparts. I did a test booking for a room at the five star Radisson Edwardian Heathrow Hotel (which has been voted the best airport hotel in the world), and the rate offered was 125 British pounds. For a comparable hotel, that price would be hard to match in London city.

Day trip to Petra?

QUESTION: On a trip to Israel next month, we plan to visit Petra in Jordan. Can you advise us whether one day would be sufficient, whether it is physcially taxing and if we need a guide. - Jenny Badenhorst.

ANSWER: You can take a one-day tour from Israel, most of which leave from the Arava Border Crossing in Eilat. However, to really experience Petra without exhausting yourself, devote a few days to exploring the valley in a leisurely fashion. To reach Petra's famous monastery you must take a long climb up steps cut into the soft rock. If you are not fit, you should consider the option of riding donkeys instead. Guides are licensed by the government and they generally provide a good service. You can hire a guide at Petra, but you need to negotiate the extent of the services you need and the payment before you set out.

Cheap flight to Bali

QUESTION: We will be visiting Malaysia and Singapore in May and would like to extend our trip to Bali. We have checked the prices on Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines and would like to know if there are any decent budget carriers flying from either destination to Bali that would offer cheaper fares. - Ingrid Du Toit

ANSWER: Air Asia, which has an excellent reputation, flies from Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Denpasar (Bali) daily. In keeping with most budget carriers, ticket prices vary according to demand, but you should be able to get a return ticket for less than R1000. You should book as soon as possible on the www.airasia.com website. Please note, however, that if you travelled to Asia from South Africa on Singapore Airlines or Malaysia Airlines, you should ask about the cost of an add-on ticket to Bali with that airline, as opposed to a separate ticket. The price may be substantially less.

Travel auctions on the Internet

QUESTION: I believe that one can buy discounted luxury trips and hotels at auctions on the Internet. Do you have any information on this? - Brett Sampson

ANSWER: One of the most popular sites is www.luxurylink.com, which auctions packages at upmarket resorts around the globe. The offer goes to the highest bidder. However, as with other websites offering 'discounted deals', you need to do some research to ensure that you are getting good value. There are some exceptional bargains, but you can also find comparable, or cheaper, offers on the operator's own website or other discount sites. Also, you need to note if there is a 'handling fee', usually US$30 in the case of the luxurylink website. You can try www.skyauction.com for hotel rooms in the USA.

Are 'resort fees' a rip-off?

QUESTION: We have booked a four-star hotel in Miami and have noticed that we have to pay a daily 'resort fee' of 12 US dollars. I emailed the hotel and was told this was for use of pool loungers, beach chairs and other facilities. Surely these should be included in the price? - Jane Miles

ANSWER: Of course this charge is ludicrous and is an example of how some hotels, especially in the United States, are sneakily increasing their effective room rates. An explanation I have heard is that the charge was instituted in hotels which had a high percentage of long-term guests who objected to paying for facilities they did not use. Those who wished to use the pool, etc, were therefore charged for it. However, over time this has become a compulsory fee for all guests, a nice income-booster for the hotels. As you have been advised about the charge, you cannot refuse to pay. You can cancel your reservation in protest or calculate the true cost of the hotel room (with all the extras and taxes added in) and decide whether it represents fair value.

Snorkeling in Krabi

QUESTION: We are a group of six adults and two children aged 4 and 6. We wish to visit Thailand in January 2009. We enjoy snorkelling and would like to stay in Krabi. Please recommend reasonably priced accommodation which is quiet and has easy access to snorkeling - Collin Hey.

ANSWER: January is peak season in Thailand, so prices will be much higher. If you were to come in the low season, you would pay 50% less for accommodation. However, assuming you have to come in January, and wish to stay on the mainland, the best place would be Ao Nang, which has plenty of accommodation. A double room in a decent guest house or small hotel would cost you around 1200-2000 baht (R285-R475). A hotel with a pool would cost from 3000 baht (R715). There is little snorkelling in Ao Nang bay, but you can hire a longtail boat for daytrips to snorkelling spots such as Poda Island, Chicken Island, Taloo Island and Ao Phra Nang beach. Phi Phi Islands has great snorkelling, so your best bet would be to stay on Phi Phi Don Island, where accommodation will cost much the same. My budget accommodation of choice in Ao Nang would be The Verandah Guesthouse or The Palace. On Phi Phi try the Phi Phi Hotel or the Phi Phi Cabana Resort.
