Rent a villa in Mauritius

QUESTION: I would like to rent a private apartment or house in Mauritius as a way of saving costs on a family holiday. Any ideas? - John Muller

ANSWER: There is plenty of accommodation available for private rental on the island. You can shop around on the Internet, as there are a number of websites advertising accommodation priced in Euros. You can expect to pay around 40 Euros (R380) per day for a good one-bedroom villa or apartment and around 100 Euros (R950) per day for a family house. You will pay less for properties located away from beaches or facilities. Check out www.mauritiuspalms.com and www.isla-mauritius.com. You can find some great deals priced per week on the websites www.homeholidays.com and www.villarenters.com. I found a modern villa not far from the beach in Pereybere with a private swimming pool for 175 - 245 Euros (R1660-R2320) per week. The villa sleeps six, is air-conditioned and has two full bathrooms.

However, before you book you need to check the price of available airfares to Mauritius. The flight/hotel packages you see advertised include discounted airfares which you may not be able to get. Independent tickets to Mauritius can be very expensive. You will pay more for rentals over the peak Christmas/New Year period. There are also fewer options available, as many owners are using their holiday homes at this time.
