How do I get a free ticket?

QUESTION: Whenever I try to use air miles to get a free seat, I am told that there are no seats available and I end up having to pay for a ticket, earning even more miles. Is it really possible to earn free flights or is accumulating air miles just a waste of time? - Dan Jones

ANSWER: It certainly is possible to get free tickets, but you need to book early and be flexible. Airlines only make a limited number of seats available for redemption (and upgrading), so you need to get in before anyone else does. If you want a seat in a peak period, you need to book at least six months in advance. But, rather than trying to use them over Easter, the Christmas holidays or to attend big sporting events, redeem your miles for out-of-season holiday breaks and private events like wedding and birthdays, when the demand is likely to be least. For popular international destinations like the United Kingdom and Australia, you will have a better chance of success if you compile a long list of possible dates. You can then plan your overseas holiday around the date you get a seat. And don't wait until just before the miles expire. Thousands of other people will be in the same boat, so the chances of getting a ticket to any destination is likely to be very slim.
