Is health insurance worthwhile?

QUESTION: My 20-year-old son is going travelling in Europe for two months. My husband and I are insisting that he take health insurance for the trip. He has been quoted around R500, but he feels it is a waste of money and he would rather use the funds for travel costs. What is your view? - Joanne Thompson

ANSWER: I can understand your son's feelings, but you are wise to insist on insurance coverage. Anything can happen, especially if he is backpacking. There are plenty of horror stories of young travellers incurring massive medical bills on foreign escapades. Once he is in Europe, I am sure he will realise that the equivalent of only 50 Euros is a small price to pay. A dental mishap could cost him more than that in medical bills. If he remains sceptical, perhaps you could give him insurance cover as a farewell gift. It may be worth it for your own peace of mind.
