QUESTION: We often stay in bed and breakfast establishments these days and many of them consist of only two or three rooms run by a couple. I find it a problem deciding whether I should tip or not. While I normally tip in hotels, I feel the host or hostess might be offended if I leave a few coins on the breakfast tray or on my pillow. What do you think? - Isobel Reynolds
ANSWER: I asked a few travellers and the general consensus is that they would not tip the owners of a guest house, but may offer a tip if they are being served by hired staff. Most people said that, in the case of exceptional service from the owners, a small gift (like a box of biscuits or sweets) would be more appropriate. One guest house owner I asked said a thank-you card or a good comment on their website would be the best reward for an enjoyable stay.
