Rent an apartment in New York

QUESTION: I am going to be staying in New York for six weeks later this year. Do you have any suggestions on where to stay for that long a period without it costing a fortune? - Meg Harris

ANSWER: New York is an expensive city, whether you are staying for a short or a long time. You best bet is to check the listings for the city in Craigslist (www.craigslist) under the heading "sublets/temporary". You may get a room in an apartment or a studio or apartment of your own. Either way, it will be much cheaper than any hotel or bed and breakfast. You could also post an advert in the housing section of Craigslist, explaining exactly what you are looking for. This service is free. However, you need to be aware that not all sublets are legal and you could be evicted in exceptional cases. Make sure that you get the details of your deal in writing.
