Boutique hotels in Tel Aviv

QUESTION: My husband and I are hoping to visit Israel in March. We would prefer not to stay in one of the big international tourist hotels in Tel Aviv and are hoping to find a more intimate boutique property. As it's our first visit to the Holy Land, we would like it to be special. We would appreciate any suggestions. - Anthea Levin

ANSWER: You won't have problems finding a boutique hotel in Tel Aviv. One of the most interesting is Hotel Cinema (Zamenhoff Street, Tel 972 3 520 7100), which is located in a converted movie theatre. Meticulously restored rooms with all the modcons contrast with original bric-a-brac from its past, such as movie posters, film projectors and theatre chairs. Well located in Dizengoff Circle.

Even more exclusive is the Nina Cafe Suites Hotel (Shabazi Street, Tel 972 3 516 1767) is a five-suite boutique hotel in the historic Neve Tzedek quarter. Decor is inspired by the owner's love of Paris, and suites have custom-designed furniture, antique lamps and slate-walled bathrooms. Book the duplex garden suite for your own outdoor area. Meals are delivered from the Nina Cafe across the street.

If you're interested in the Chinese tradition of Feng Shui, you'll be in your element at the Hotel De La Mer (Nes Tziona Street, Tel 972 3 5100011). A restored Bauhaus exterior conceals stunning interior design based on the principles of Feng Shui. The hotel overlooks the Mediterranean and the city's golden beaches and guests can while away their time being pampered in massage rooms or lounging on the sun bathing deck. Coffee and tea is offered free in the lobby 24 hours a day.

Finally, you could try the Tel Aviv Hotel Vital (Weizman Street, Tel 972-3-7770000), a super-efficient boutique hotel favoured by business travellers. It offers great service and an elegant atmosphere, but its biggest asset is its location within walking distance of the Opera House, Tel Aviv Museum, Azriely shopping centre and many fine restaurants. To top it all, a private elevator whisks guests directly to the new shopping center and cafes at the Weitzman Center, the cultural and business centre of the city.
