Stay over on a farm

QUESTION: We will be driving from Gauteng to the Eastern Cape over the Christmas holiday and are looking for stopover accommodation in Colesberg. Do you have any suggestions? - Graham Johns.

ANSWER: Some of the best accommodation in Colesberg is located on farms outside of the town. A perennial favourite is the Kuilfontein Stable Cottages, which is situated on the N1 12 kilometres south of Colesberg. This oasis offers dinner, bed and breakfast in very comfortable rooms on a traditional Karoo farm. (Tel: 051-753 1364) Or you could try the Van Zylsvlei Bed and Breakfast, which is situated 6km from Colesberg on the Philippolis road. Dinner and breakfast is available. (Tel: 051-753 0589) In the town, you can try Traveller's Joy, located in a restored residence built in 1840 (Tel: 051-753 1160), or The Barracks, a four-star guest house. (Tel: 051- 753 2286). On the outskirts of town is the very popular three-star Merino Inn Hotel. (Tel 051-753 0781). Go to www.wheretostay.co.za for listings of a wide range of accommodation.
