Backpacking in Jordan

QUESTION: I would like to go backpacking in Jordan for a few days after an organised tour to Madaba and Petra. Could you recommend some locations on the Dead Sea that could provide me with some adventure? - Kevin York

ANSWER: Three areas you could visit are Wadi Rum, Wadi Mujib and Dana Nature Reserve. In Madi Rum you can base yourself at Beit Ali, an upmarket camp which costs around $35 with meals. Take a camel or jeep ride to locations used in the filming of "Lawrence of Arabia". You cannot stay overnight at Wadi Mujib, but you can travel from Amman on a day trip. A Bedouin guide is mandatory in this 100-square kilometre reserve on the Dead Sea. At the Dana Preserve, you can stay in a tent camp or guesthouse. Less adventurous travellers to the Dead Sea near Amman can stay at the Movenpick Resort and Spa or the Jordan Valley Marriott Resort and Spa.
