Q: Our family has decided to fly our 75 year-old father out to England to see his grandchildren. We decided that he should fly in business class, to make it more comfortable for him. However, my travel agent has quoted us over R42,000 for a return ticket to London on SAA, which we consider excessive. Is there a cheaper business class fare on another airline, preferably on a direct flight? - Sam Le Roux
A: The fare you were quoted on SAA is the full business class fare. There is a cheaper SAA fare (in D class) which would give you the same seat for around R26,000. Your dates are presumably fairly flexible, so you should be able to find a ticket at this price. If your travel agent cannot offer you one, you can book directly on the SAA website, www.flysaa.com. There are cheaper business class fares on airlines travelling through Europe or the Middle East, but these would all necessitate a change of plane. British Airways and Virgin have a premium economy class, which is more spacious and has better service than economy, but is not a full business class. These fares range from around R15,000 return.

Cruise on Vaal River
Q: Your recent reference to the cruisers on Knysna lagoon got us thinking as to whether there is anything similar on the Vaal River that we can use for a weekend. If there isn't, perhaps someone could think of starting up such a business. - Les Koch
A: I know of at least one such service, called Old Willow No. 7 Houseboat Charters. It is based at the Vaal Barrage area on river near Vanderbijlpark, about an hour's drive from Johannesburg. The houseboats can accommodate a maximum of five people and the daily rate ranges from R695 to R1095, depending on season. The company can be contacted at telephone 016-973-1729 or via their website: www.riverhouseboats.co.za.

Dollars for Singapore
Q: I am going to New Zealand on Singapore Airlines and will be stopping at Singapore Airport for about 11 hours before I get my connecting flight to Christchurch. Would you be able to tell me, more or less, how much currency in Singapore dollars I should take with me as I don't want to sit with surplus Singapore money. - Irene Liebenberg.
A: How much you need really depends on what you want to do. You can take the free Singapore Tour from the airport or go into the city by taxi (around Sing$25.) The cost of food and drinks in Singapore is similar to that in the upmarket shopping centres in Johannesburg and Cape Town. If you decide to rest at the airport, you can book a room in the airport transit hotel. It will cost you about S$65 for a double room for six hours, with additional hours costing S$14 per hour. You can use the swimming pool, sundeck, jacuzzi and gym for around S$10 per person. Basically, you do not really need cash at Singapore Airport as you could charge everything to your credit card. If you prefer using cash I would recommend you have S$100 per person with you. What you don't spend on the outward leg, you can spend on the return journey. And cashing it back into Rands is pretty simple.

Bus tour of SA
Q: To celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary, our children have offered us a holiday to the destination of our choice. We do not want to travel overseas, and would like to do a bus tour of South Africa where all accommodation and excursions are organised. We do not want a private tour, as we appreciate the company of other travellers. We would like to depart from Johannesburg and, preferably, end up in Cape Town. – Rene De Villiers.
A Springbok Atlas operates a scheduled 16-day tour along your route of choice. Travelling by luxury coach, the tour includes all accommodation and the services of a tour guide throughout. Highlights include a visit to Blyde River Canyon and God’s Window, open vehicle game drives in the Kruger Park, a stop at a craft market in Swaziland, lunch and a cultural show in a traditional Zulu village, a lagoon cruise in Knysna and visits to the Cango Caves and an ostrich farm in Oudtshoorn. Your trip will include a flight from Durban to Port Elizabeth, which cuts down substantially on the distance travelled by coach. SA's top golf courses
Q: A business associate from the United States will visit South Africa July. He is a very keen golfer and wants to play our best courses. He has asked me to recommend the three top courses in the country. Besides the Sun City course, no-one I talk to seems to agree. Help! – Alec Downey.
A: I doubt you will find any two golfers to agree on all three. However, the Gary Player Country Club at Sun City would probably feature on most lists, as a result of the Million Dollar Challenge. My research suggests the other top courses include The Links course at Fancourt, near George on the Garden Route, and Leopard Creek, adjoining the Kruger Park near Nelspruit. Of the city courses, the top choice seems to be the Durban Country Club.

Hotel at Hong Kong Airport
Q: Do you know of any reasonably-priced accommodation near Hong Kong Airport? We have a 20-hour stopover there and the room rate we have been offered for a double room at the Regal Airport Hotel is HK$2500 (R2400). We would like to spend only about half that amount. - Faith Smith
A: The Regal Hong Kong Airport Hotel is the only hotel at the airport and is conveniently connected by a walkway. You can get the rate down to around R1700 by booking through discount websites. A good alternative is the Novotel Citygate Hotel in Tung Chung, which is only a five-minute trip by shuttle bus. You can get a double room there for around R1100 on the Internet. To get a hotel any cheaper, you will have to book a room in Hong Kong or Kowloon, which is a 20-minute trip away by airport express train. For great value, try the oddly-named YMCA Salisbury Hotel on the harbourfront in Kowloon, which operates as a regular hotel. You can get a room for around R700 a night and share the same view as the five-star Peninsula Hotel next door.

Rent Princess Margaret's beach house
Q: I read in a magazine that Princess Margaret's holiday home in the Caribbean can be rented by the week. Can you find out how much this is likely to cost? Spending a week there would be a dream come true for me and my family. - Lily De Bruyn
A: Les Jolies Eaux, the house on Mustique Island given to Britain’s Princess Margaret in the 1960 as a wedding gift, can be rented for $16000 a week, excluding a surcharge over Christmas. With five bedrooms and a party of 10 people, that works out at around R1700 per person per night (R120, 000 per week). The Princess spent many holidays there, but the villa is no longer owned by the royal family. However, its' royal past and splendid location on a secluded peninsula, ensures that it remains highly sought-after. Check out www.mustique-island.com for rental details. Other celebrity holiday homes on the island available for rental include Mick Jagger's Japanese-style beachfront villa ($16000 per week) and the spectacular eight-bedroomed hilltop mansion owned by fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger ($30000-$48000 per week).

Internet cafes in London
Q: Are internet cafes easily accessible in London? I will be staying in a bed and breakfast near Victoria Station. I asked the owner about Internet facilities, but she has no clue. I need to have daily access to my email and will consider changing my accommodation if it is going to be a problem. - Debbie Levin
A: You won't have a problem; there are plenty of cheap Internet cafes in central London. The company which owns the airline easyJet has opened 14 huge Internet cafes in London, with one directly opposite Victoria’s mainline station in Wilton Road. It has 330 computers and is open from 8am to midnight Tuesday-Saturday and 8am-11pm on Sunday and Monday. The price changes depending how busy the store is and how long you stay at the computer, but it is reasonable. Other easyInternetcafe outlets are close to Charing Cross, Tottenham Court road and Bond Street tube stations. The company also has cafes in many cities in Europe.

Compensation for flight delay
Q. I travel to Europe frequently and have, on occasion, had my flight delayed or cancelled. Could you give details on how airlines in Europe are obliged to compensate passengers when flights are delayed? - Peter Cole
A. The European Union Air Passenger Rights rules provide for compensation for delayed or canceled flights. The rules apply to all passengers (whether or not they are residents of a European Union country) who have a confirmed reservation and who have checked in on time for a flight taking off from any European Union airport on any airline, or flying to a European Union airport on an EU airline. So, this would apply were you whether you were on a European airline such as Lufthansa or a foreign carrier such as SAA, as long as you are departing from an EU airport.
You can check the rules at the European Commission's Web site, ec.europa.eu/transport/air_portal/, where you can find a list of the National Enforcement Bodies of the 27 countries in the European Union, plus Norway and Switzerland. (Click on Passenger Rights and then go to Legislation.) If your flight departs from an EU country, complain there; if you are traveling from outside to the European Union and your flight is operated by an EU airline, complain to the country where it lands.
You can also contact the Europe Direct Service toll-free number at 00-800-67891011 (this can only be used in Europe); or long distance at (32-2) 299-96-96, from anywhere; or e-mail your complaint to mail@europe-direct.cec.eu.int.

Cruise to St Helena
Q: I am interested in catching the ship to St Helena in August this year. Can you tell me how often the vessel operates, how much it costs and how long one can stay over on the island during a cruise? - Bert Snyman
A: The St Helena line operates roughly one return cruise a month between Cape Town and St Helena. For example, in August the vessel departs on August 15, 2007 and returns on September 3, 2007. It continues from St Helena to Ascension Island, so you would disembark at St Helena on August 20/21 and embark again on 28/29 August for the return trip. Fares are supplied in British Pounds Sterling, but you can get the Rand fare, which depends on the exchange rate, from the St Helena line office in Cape Town (tel; (021) 425 1165) The one-way fare between Cape Town and St Helena ranges from 390 British Pounds in a four-berth cabin with window to 843 British Pounds in a twin-bedded cabin with window. Budget fares in a four-berth cabin on a lower deck without air-conditioning start at 288 British Pounds. The fares include accommodation and all meals.

Experience farm life
Q: My cousins, now living in San Diego, are planning a trip to South Africa. They will be driving from Johannesburg to Plettenberg Bay and, as they are keen for their children to experience the country life here, they would like to spend a few days on a working farm. Can you help? - Julie Forrester
A: There are plenty of guest farms or farmstays available (www.sa-venues.com or www.wheretostay.co.za). Many specialise in back-to-nature holidays for families, with wholesome farm meals and a chance to become involved in farm life. Your relatives could consider Abbotsbury farm outside Graaff-Reinet, a working sheep farm (tel: 049-840 0201), Redcliffe Guest Farm in the Winterberg mountains near Tarkastad, where they can have a farmhouse to themselves(tel: 045-848 0152), or Wolwefontein Lodge near Colesberg, a horse stud farm (tel: 051-753 0301).

Tax refund for unused ticket
Q: As a frequent traveller on a budget, I sometimes forfeit the fare if I cannot use a non-refundable ticket. I recently lost out on two tickets, on British Airways and easyjet, when I had to cut short a European trip. My travel agent says that airlines should refund the tax I have paid. Is this true? - Steve Cher
A: Yes, you are entitled to a refund on the taxes on the unused ticket (which can be substantial and up to 50 percent of the cost of a ticket). However, most airlines impose an administration fee, which they will deduct from the refundable amount. Easyjet charges five British pounds and British Airways 20-25 British Pounds. You need to contact the airlines directly and fill in a refund application form.

Budget hotel in Cape Town
Q: I need to stay in a hotel in Cape Town for a weekend at the end of April to attend a relative's wedding. I cannot seem to find a hotel room in the city centre/Sea Point area for less than R750 a night. Please help. - Sue Mackintosh
A: Cape Town hotels have become pricey, but you can find good value. If you want really basic accommodation, the best value is the Formula 1 hotel on the foreshore. A room for R264 per night can sleep up to three people (Tel: 021 418-4664). For more comfort and a swimming pool, try the Garden Court Eastern Boulevard's "summer special" at R398 per room (www.southernsun.com). Alternatively, you can try your hand at bidding for one of the City Lodge properties (www.bid2stay.co.za). Expect to pay around 50% of the regular room rate. Of course, there are many bed and breakfasts from about R200 per person (ww.capestay.co.za).

Extra miles for extra seat?
Q: If I were to buy two or more seats to stretch out in economy class as a comfortable and cost-effective alternative to business class, can I earn miles on every seat? - Ryan Nel
A: No, miles are only awarded for one person travelling, no matter how many seats they have booked or use during the flight. Airlines would prefer you to pay the higher price of business class.

Damage in Cancun
Q: We are considering visiting Cancun in Mexico in June, but are concerned that the resort may not have recovered fully from the devastation of Hurricane Wilma in 2005. Are the beaches and hotels back to normal yet? - Kevin Wright
A: The beaches were restored and doubled in size as part of a $20-million recovery programme last year, but latest reports suggest that there has been heavy erosion on some beaches. However, this should not unduly affect your holiday in this exciting destination. Most of the beaches are the same as they were before the hurricane - and the hotels and facilities are much improved following massive renovations and rebuilding on the tourist strip.

London to Paris: train or plane?
Q: Is it cheaper to fly with a budget airline or travel by Eurostar between London and Paris?
A: It seems there is very little difference, so it comes down to a matter of choice. Using the same dates in June, I made bookings on Eurostar and the budget airline easyJet. The cheapest Eurostar ticket was 59 British Pounds return, while a ticket on easyJet from Luton Airport, London, to Charles de Gaulle Airport, Paris, came to 51 British pounds. The air trip is 90 minutes shorter than the train trip, but transfer times to and from the airports easily accounts for that.

All-inclusive rates
QUESTION: Do you know of any all-inclusive hotels in South Africa, similar to the beach resorts overseas where the daily rate includes all meals, drinks and entertainment? - Dan Human
ANSWER: Outside of the very expensive game lodges aimed at the international market, I do not know of any. Some hotels at holiday spots like the Wild Coast and the Drakensberg offer rates which includes meals and afternoon tea, but you have to pay extra for drinks and any snacks you order outside of meal times. If anyone knows of hotels which offer all-inclusive rates, let us know

Park for R10 at Jhb Airport
QUESTION: We need to park our car at O.R Tambo Airport in Johannesburg for 4-5 days. Can you suggest the most convenient and cost-effective parking facility near the departure area? - Tass Andrews
ANSWER: To avoid paying the high daily rate charged by parking areas close to the terminals, you can use the airport's new Long-Term Parking Area. For R10 per day, you get secure, covered parking with a free shuttle to the arrivals/departures area. The shuttle bus runs every 15 minutes and the guarded parking facility is open 24 hours every day. It is located close to Jet Park, past the Emperor's Palace casino complex. Luggage restrictions
QUESTION: I understand that there is a new hand luggage policy at SA airports. What are the implications for us?- Dave McGregor
ANSWER: The new restrictions, the same as those in the UK and USA, came into force for all international airline passengers at SA airports on April 2, 2007. Basically, you are now only allowed ONE item of hand baggage with a maximum size of 56cm tall, 45cm wide and 25cm deep. Other bags, such as handbags and laptops, must be carried within this single item of cabin baggage. All liquids must be placed in one transparent re-sealable bag, no larger than 20cmx20cm. All duty-free shopping purchased after the security check can be taken onboard. For further information, check out the Frequently Asked Questions on www.baa.com - the British Airports Authority website.

Private lodge in Kruger Park
QUESTION: We are having a family reunion later this year to celebrate my father's birthday. We would love to have a game lodge to ourselves in or close to the Kruger Park, but cannot afford a luxury lodge like Mala Mala or Sabi Sabi. We would prefer a self-catering camp or lodge, where we are free to do our own thing. Our party will consist of 10-14 people, including teenagers. Do you know of a suitable place? - Dave Grove.
ANSWER: There are two self-catering bush lodges in the Kruger Park that are rented as single units for total privacy. Boulders Bush Lodge, located 16 kilometres from the Mopani rest camp, accommodates 12 people in one two-bedroomed cottage and four separate en-suite bedrooms. The daily rate is R1750 for 1-4 people and R320 for each additional guest. Roodewal Bush Lodge, situated 40 kilometres from the Olifants rest camp, sleeps up to 19 people in one two-bedroom cottage and three bungalows. The rate daily is R1650 for 1-4 guests and R320 for each additional person. Book through www.places.co.za or www.krugerpark-direct.com.

QUESTION: I would like to rent an apartment in Barcelona for a two-week holiday. Can you provide me with reputable web sites or agencies that provide short-term rentals? I would prefer not to stay in a hotel and would prefer a one-bedroom or studio. - Michael Green
ANSWER: Websites you can look at include www.apartmentinbarcelona.net or www.citysiesta.com - both of which are highly regarded. You can also look at rentals.loquo.com, which has traveller reviews of apartments. If there is a photograph, look out for a window (some apartments are windowless!) and, if the apartment is on a high floor, you may want to ensure that the building has a lift.

High tea in London
QUESTION: On a recent visit to London, I tried in vain to find a restaurant offering a traditional English afternoon tea with scones, cucumber sandwiches and the like. Do you know where this is still offered? - Jane Douglas
ANSWER: Nobody does afternoon tea like the old London hotels. This doesn't come cheap though; a cuppa and cakes is likely to cost you 20-40 British pounds. The most famous is undoubtedly Tea at the Ritz. Only a short stroll from Buckingham Palace, the Ritz Hotel now has five tea sittings, from 11.30am to 7.35pm. If you're in the Hyde Park area, head for the Dorchester Hotel from 2.30pm-6pm for a lavish spread, including pink champagne. For a touch of history, you can follow in the step in the footsteps of the Queen Mother and Oscar Wilde and enjoy one of 30 traditional English teas at The Cadogan Hotel.

Children in New York
QUESTION: I will be in New York for three days with my family. Can you suggest things for the children to do? - Amy Birkholtz
ANSWER: Besides the Statue of Liberty, the Statten Island ferry and the Empire State building, there are plenty of things to keep children amused. There's the excellent New York Aquarium, the Bronz Zoo and the real-life wonderworld that is Central Park. Youngsters will be fascinated by the Children's Museum of Manhatten and the Sony Wonder Lab, a technology and entertainment museum which is free. If you're out shopping, stop in at F.A.O. Schwarz, a huge toy shop on Fifth Avenue. And for a treat, visit Dylan's Candy Bar, across the road from Bloomingdale's, and, nearby, a fabulous ice cream parlour and restaurant, Serendipity.

Holiday in Sri Lanka
QUESTION: I would like to visit Sri Lanka on holiday and have a few questions. Will I need a visa? Which is the easiest route using the same airline? Can you recommend a beach resort and hotel within easy reach of Colombo? - Jan Burden
ANSWER: South Africans do not need a visa for a holiday visit of up to 30 days. Using a single airline, the easiest would be to fly via the Middle East. You can travel with Emirates Airline via Dubai, Qatar Airways via Doha or Etihad Airways via Abu Dhabi. Negombo is regarded as the most convenient beach resort for Colombo and is only a few minutes away from the international airport. My choice of hotel is The Beach Negombo, a stylish resort on a private beach which costs around $125 for a double room per night on discount websites. A more affordable choice would be the nearby Blue Oceanic Hotel for around $60 per room.

Festival Accommodation
QUESTION: We are considering going to the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in July. Could you recommend accommodation? - John Arnold
ANSWER: The festival website (www.nafest.co.za) has a vast list of all accommodation available, including from hotels, guest houses, bed and breakfasts, university residences, school hostels, homestays and campsites. (Tel: 046-603 1103, fax: 046-622 3082). An option that tickled my fancy was the 'Kreef Hotel', a tented bed and breakfast hotel which has its roots at the Oppikoppi Music Festival. Live in a pre-pitched tent with mattress and bedding, dine in a big marquee and sit around a 24-hour fireplace when you're not show-hopping. Sounds like a great idea.

Age limit on Otter Trail
QUESTION: My family is considering hiking the Otter Trail in the Tsitsikama National Park. Is there an age restriction - my son is 16 years old and my father-in-law is a very fit 68? Can hikers use cell phones on the hike, how much does it cost and how far in advance do we need to book? - Tommy James
ANSWER: Hikers must be aged 12-65, so your dad-in-law cannot join you. Cell phones are permitted on the hike, but reception is patchy and there is no reception at the sleeping huts. A hiking permit costs R420 per person and you should try to book far in advance, up to 12 months ahead, or else you will have to rely on cancellations. For further information and reservations, check www.sanparks.org or telephone 012-426-5111.

How to get an upgrade
QUESTION: How can I get an upgrade to business or first class on a flight? - Reg Snow
ANSWER: If only we all knew the answer to this one! Other than 'paying' for an upgrade with airmiles, there is no foolproof method of getting bumped up to the land of spacious seating and fine dining. However, two things that will better your chances are making sure you are a member of the airlines' frequent flier scheme and dressing like an executive traveller. A person in business attire will certainly be upgraded before someone in a tracksuit and slip-slops. Single travellers have a better chance of being chosen than couples, so stay solo in the check-in queue and look like you don't belong among the tourist class passengers. Finally, if all else fails, ask to be upgraded. You can say you need space to work on your laptop, but never use illness as a reason (no one wants an ailing passenger infecting or bothering premium passengers). Don't be shy of using a birthday or special occasion to bolster your case. It may just work.

Cheap hotel in Bangkok
QUESTION: My boyfriend and I will be spending a few nights in Bangkok during July. Can you recommend a good, clean hotel in a lively area, where we are likely to mix with other travellers in the 20-30 age bracket? - Denise Snyman
ANSWER: The Khoasan Road area is a famous gathering spot for young travellers in Asia, made famous by the movie of the book, The Beach, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. To the dismay of some backpackers, it has become more upmarket with trendy restaurants, nightclubs and shops. It has also become the hangout for fashionable young Thais eager to engage foreigners. The best place to stay is Buddy Lodge, a three-star hotel with teak-floored rooms and a swimming pool on the roof. If you can't get a reservation (advance booking essential), stay at its' sister hotel, Hotel De' Moc (10-15 minutes walk) or opt for the Sawasdee Khaosan Inn or the Viengtai Hotel. A room at one of these hotels will cost you R300-R400. If you are on a tight budget you can stay at a guesthouse for as little as R50, although a half-decent room will cost you around R150.

Pricey ticket from Sydney
Question: I'm looking to visit my son in Sydney in October or bringing him back to SA for a holiday. On checking ticket costs on SAA/Quantas, it would appear to cost twice as much for a return ticket Sydney/Johannesburg as opposed to Johannesburg/Sydney? Am I calculating correctly? Are there any cheaper flights on other airlines? - Irene Holliday
Answer: You calculations appear to be correct. The cost of tickets on routes is different, depending on your airport of departure. A good example of this is the SA-London route, where travellers from London usually end up paying far more (in Rand value) than we do. Paying for a ticket in a country other than the country of departure can also add to the cost.
I did an Internet check on flights between Johannesburg and Sydney, using the flight dates of October 3 and October 17. The cost on SAA from Jhb-Syd return was R8,915. A return ticket from Syd-Jhb the fare was 2,245 Australian dollars(R13,029 at the exchange rate of R5,8 to AUD.) As this flight is operated by Qantas, I got a quote booking through Qantas and the fare was slightly higher at AUD2381. This is the only direct flight between the two cities. However, you have plenty of options via the Middle East and Asia. You can try Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Thai International Airways and Cathay Pacific for flights via Asia. Flying via the Middle East, you can try Emirates, Gulf Air and Etihad Airlines.
However, a quick check of Singapore Airlines and Emirates websites did not yield any significant savings. Your best bedt is to get your son to get quotations from a travel agent in Sydney and check for specials advertised in Australia.

Brad Pitt's hotel in Namibia
Question: I read that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie had rented an entire guest lodge in Namibia when they were there for the birth of their baby. Do you know which guest house this was and how much it costs per night? I would love to stay there, just for the fun of it - Alec Grey
Answer: The hotel is the Burning Shore Beach Lodge, which is located on Long Beach, just south of Swakopmund. It is very comfortable, but not as super-luxurious as some of the famous game lodges in southern Africa. The Burning Shore has seven rooms and five suites, but I am sure you won't be hoping to hire the entire lodge! Room rates, including taxes and breakfast, start from around 790 Namibian dollars in low season to N$1990 for a suite in high season. (The Namibian dollar is equal to the Rand.) You can contact the lodge via their website www.burningshore.info or by telephone: +264 64 207 568.

There is a wide range of good accommodation in Stellenbosch, ranging from simple bed and breakfasts to lodges on wine estates and fine hotels.
One of the best choices would be the Lanzerac Manor and Winery, a beautiful resort set on a working wine estate on the outskirts of the town. Choose from four restaurants, enjoy wine tastings on the property and take your late-night cognacs and cigars in the superb Craven Lounge. This hotel, which also boasts a spa and wellness centre, is definitely something special. (Telephone 021-887 1132.)
Another five-star hotel in a country setting, is the WedgeView Country House and Spa. Located five minutes from town, you can pamper yourselves in the Exclusive Decleor Health and Beauty Spa without leaving the property. The two-bedroomed suite is perfect for families. (Telephone 021- 881 3525.)
If you like very small hotels, the Batavia Boutique Hotel may be perfect. Located just off Dorp Street in the heart of Stellenbosch, it consists of only five luxurious bedrooms. Here you'll get personal service, along with facilities usually only available in larger hotels, such as a swimming pool, a dining room with an excellent selection of wines, a reading room, an internet connection and even room service. It was voted the best boutique hotel for 2005 and 2006 in the AA Accommodation Awards. (Telephone 021- 887 2914.)
Answer:
There is a wide range of good accommodation in Stellenbosch, ranging from simple bed and breakfasts to lodges on wine estates and fine hotels.
One of the best choices would be the Lanzerac Manor and Winery, a beautiful resort set on a working wine estate on the outskirts of the town. This exclusive manor, with its own health spa, offers authentic Cape Dutch architecture, antiques and a rarified air of casual elegance. Choose from four restaurants, enjoy wine tastings on the property and take your late-night cognacs and cigars in the superb Craven Lounge. This hotel, which also boasts a spa and wellness centre, is definitely something special. (Telephone 021-887 1132.)

Casino in Kuala Lumpur
QUESTION: We are attending a conference in Kuala Lumpur and one of my colleagues wants us to join him at a casino resort, which he says is nearby. I am baffled, as I have never heard of a casino or gambling in Malaysia. - Jay Redman
ANSWER: Although it is not highly publicised internationally, there is a huge casino complex in the Genting Highlands, about 50kms from Kuala Lumpur. With thousands of rooms in six hotels and 24-hour casinos, the resort complex is usually packed with punters from KL, Singapore and Thailand. The Genting City of Entertainment complex also has a wide range of facilities for children and families, including a theme park and game arcades. Malaysian Muslims are not permitted to enter the casino.

Round the world ticket
QUESTION: I intend to travel the world for about 12 months (about 20 destinations). I believe that the most economical way to do so is by a ‘round the world’ ticket. I would like to book accommodation in advance and I wonder if you could suggest a ‘one stop’ organization that provides decent accommodation around the globe at a reasonable price ($50-$75). I am 53 years old, so backpacking is not an option. However I would prefer not to spend $120.00+ in hotels. - Chris van der Spuy.
ANSWER: A 'round the world' ticket is certainly the most economical way to travel. However, booking your accommodation in advance may not give you the best price. Many hotels and guest houses will offer special prices to walk-in guests and have special offers available at airports and bus stations. The exception is during high season or a peak period, when booking early is advisable. By booking early you will miss out on taking advantage of the tips and tales from other travellers you meet. However, if you are sure you want to book in advance, your best bet is to research each destination by reading guides and traveller blogs, which are a great source of information. Before you book, check out reviews of the establishments on sites like www.tripadvisor.com. One of the better websites for finding budget accommodation is www.hostelz.com, but you can also try the regular hotel sites like www.hotels.com and www.hoteltravel.com.

Low cost flight to Turin
QUESTION: Do any low-cost airlines fly from London to Turin in Italy? - Dave King.
ANSWER: Yes, Ryanair flies from London Stansted to Turin and easyJet flies from Luton Airport. You can get a return flight for around 40 British Pounds Sterling. You could also check for special fares on British Airways, which flies from Heathrow.

Good hotel in Mthata
QUESTION: We will be driving through the Transkei and will need to stay over in Mthatha. Can you recommend a hotel or guesthouse where my car will be safe. - Ursula Bond.
ANSWER: The Mthatha Garden Court Hotel, which was previously known as the Holiday Inn Garden Court, is probably your best bet for a stopover. It is located on the perimeter of Mthatha on the road leading to East London and offers clean rooms with good facilities and a safe carpark. (Book with Southern Sun Hotels or telephone 047- 5370181).

Booking on Mykonos
QUESTION: We intend visiting the Greek Islands in September this year. We have booked our flight to Athens and would like to know if we need to book accommodation on the islands in advance. We hope to visit Mykonos and Paros. - Les White
ANSWER: The answer depends on whether you are an adventurous traveller or not. Many people like to book a few nights at a hotel on the island of their choice, so that they can be assured of accommodation when they arrive. However, I have never had trouble finding a room outside of the peak August period. There will be plenty of touts trying to sell you rooms at the ferry port, so you can usually secure a bed for the night pretty quickly if you're nervous. But if you take your time and stroll around on your own, you will usually find something to suit your budget and requirements. For me, finding a room is part of the holiday and a great way to see the islands and meet interesting people.

Getting to Nice Airport
Q: My wife are going on an ocean cruise in September that ends in Monte Carlo, Monaco. We need to get to Cote Azur International in Nice to take our flight to Dubai via Rome. I have done some research on the web….it seems as though the best alternative would be by helicopter - expensive! Any suggestions?- Michael Lester
A: Yes, the helicopter service will get you from Monaco to Nice in around 10 minutes, but it is likely to cost you around 100 Euros each (the fare changes according to season). However, as Nice Airport is only 24 kilometres from Monaco, there are plenty of other more affordable options which would get you there in less than an hour.
One of the easiest would be to catch a taxi. This is likely to cost you 80-90 Euros per taxi, so that slashes the cost by at least half. Even cheaper would be take the bus directly from Monaco to Nice airport, which costs around 16 Euros each. This express shuttle, route 110, leaves from the central station every hour. If you have the time, the scenic train journey is a viable option. There is a regular service between Monaco and Nice, but you would need to take a taxi or bus to the airport. Laden with luggage, a taxi directly from the port in Monaco to the airport is probably your best option.
As with all taxi trips, make sure you have the fare in local currency (taxi drivers never have change!) Also, make sure the taxi meter is visible and not covered by a newspaper or article of clothing. For a longer trip such as this, it is probably best to request the approximate price before you start. Write the price down and show it to the driver (just to make sure there isn't a "misunderstanding" later). Also make it clear that the price is per taxi (for two people), so that the driver does not try to claim the fare was "per person" at the end of the trip, effectively doubling the price.

Holiday with the Oppenheimers
Q: I believe that the Oppenheimer family have a super-luxury game lodge in the Kalahari Desert that can be rented by the public. Do you have any details of this lodge and how much it costs? - Roy Isaacson
A: The Oppenheimer family own Tswalu Game Reserve, which is located in the Korannberg Mountains in the southern Kalahari. The reserve, which covers 1000 square kilometres, is malaria-free and boasts 70 species of mammal including lion and cheetah.
Accommodation is in two luxurious lodges, Motse and Tarkoni. The daily rate is R4900 per person sharing (R4250 for early bookings). However, you can rent the four-suite Tarkoni Lodge for your private use at R25000 per day. The rate for exclusive use of the eight-suite Motse Lodge is R94500 per day for a maximum of 20 guests. The reserve, which is near Kuruman, is seven hours drive from Johannesburg, but the easiest way to get there is on the daily chartered flight from Johannesburg or Cape Town to the lodge's private airstrip. On selected dates, the flight is offered free if you stay four nights or more. You can get further information and book the lodges on their website (www.tswalu.com) or telephone (011) 274 2299.

No room in Beijing
Q: I am a student planning a trip to Beijing for the Olympics in August. I have my flight sorted out, as I will be in Hong Kong for July, but I am struggling to get accommodation. Do you have any suggestions? - Mike van Lingen
A: A hotel room is virtually impossible to get at this stage as they will have all been booked out by tour operators. You can try one of the tour operators in Hong Kong, but they are unlikely to allocate you one of their rooms if you don't buy a package including flights and event tickets. As I guess you are doing this on a budget, your best bet is to find alternative accommodation. You can try to find a bed in a hostel (check sites like www.Hostel.net or www.HostelWorld.com) or a site with rooms to rent in locals' homes (www.homestayBeijing2008.com).

Gambling in Singapore
Q: I hear that a big casino resort has opened in Singapore. Does it have hotel accommodation? If so, I would like to stay there when I visit Singapore in September. Could you please give me contact details. - Reyno Els
A: Contracts for two large casino resorts have been awarded in Singapore, but they have not opened yet. The first, which is owned by the Las Vegas Sands group, is scheduled to open in the city centre in July next year, while Malaysia's Genting Group will open a
spectacular casino resort on Sentosa Island in 2010.

Hotel for Hobbits
Q: I have heard about a “hotel for hobbits” in New Zealand, where one can stay in rooms built like hobbit hideouts. I thought this might be a fun break during a visit to the country in December. Do you have any idea where this hotel is? — Dave Gerard
A: This resort is located in Otorohanga, which lies in the heart of the North Island two hours drive from Auckland and 90 minutes from Rotorua. The Hobbit Motel consists of only two mountainside burrows with round windows and doorways, and is very popular with children. The motel is one of the Wiatomo Motels, a strange collection of lodgings that include an airplane from the Vietnam War, a dry-docked patrol boat and a 1950s railway car. The motels are part of Woodlyn Park, a working farm close to the famous Waitomo Caves. The area is also home to the Kiwi House and Native Bird Park. Get further details about the Hobbit Motel at the www.woodlynpark.co.nz website.

Sleep on a working farm
Q: We like to stay at working farms when travelling from Johannesburg to Cape Town. I seem to remember that some time back there was a web page advertising farms were you can stay overnight. Is that still available? — Peter Thieme
A: There are two websites where you can find extensive listings of guest farms and farm stays (www.farmstay.co.za, and www.sa-venues.com/guest_farms.htm). Be aware that not all the accommodation listed on these sites is on working farms, but there are full details of what to expect. Some of the interesting guest farms listed include Artist’s Paradise, a cattle farm on the Kabeljouwsriver near Jeffreys Bay, the Whistling Duck Farm Cottage at Wakkerstroom and the Ebenaesar Guest House on a grape farm near Kakamas in the Northern Cape.

Touring Ferrari
Q: I believe it is possible to visit the Ferrari factory and museum in Italy. Could you tell me where they are, how to get there and accommodation nearby.- James Carr
A: The museum to the Ferrari brand is known as the Galleria Ferrari and is located in Ferrari's home town of Maranello in in northern Italy. The galleria is only 300m from the factory, but you are not permitted to tour the factory (or the testing track) unless you are buying a Ferrari. The museum covers Ferrari’s history and has a number of its vehicles on show. Maranello is 20kms from Modena, so you can either rent a car or take a taxi between the two.
Interestingly, the Lamborghini factory and its museum is situated in the same area and they allow factory tours. Lamborghini can be found in Sant'Agata Bolognese, 19km from Modena. The best place to stay in the area is Modena, which has many hotels in all price brackets.

Hotel in Chiang Mai
Q: We are travelling to Bangkok in July and would like to spend a few days in Chiang Mai. Can you recommend reasonably-priced accommodation in a central location, preferably with air-conditioning and a swimming pool as I understand this is the hot season. – Janice Cruywagen.
A: The prime location for accommodation is close to the Night Market in the city centre or along the Ping River. Good choices near the market are the Manathai Village Hotel or the Maninarakorn Hotel. Along the river, try the lovely Lanna Mantra Hotel. Room are available at these hotels from R300-R600 through discount booking website like www.asiarooms.com or www.hoteltravel.com. You can get great value at the Novotel Chiang Mai from the www.novotel.com website. You can score a room for as little as R250. The hotel is about 10 minutes from the Night Market, but taxis are plentiful and there is a free shuttle bus. All the above hotels have air-conditioned rooms and a swimming pool.

One day in Amsterdam
Q: I will be in Amsterdam for a full day at the end of May. What do you recommend I see/do in so short a time? Regards Diana Jones
A: The important thing is not to rush around trying to see as much as you can, as you'll miss out on the relaxed atmosphere of this lovely city. I would start off with a leisurely canal boat cruise, which is the easiest way to take in the city's marvellous architecture. You can catch one near the main railway station. You'll learn that the city actually has more canals that Venice.
The four attractions that most people regard as "absolute musts" are the Rijks Museum, the Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House and the Sex Museum. You could try to squeeze them all in, but I would opt for a chance to see Rembrandt's The Nightwatch at the Rijks Museum and then visit Anne Frank House. Have a beer at one of the pavement pubs or one of the notorious "brown cafe's". If there's time for an early dinner, enjoy a "rijsttafel" meal, which are widely advertised at the more traditional restaurants.
And, depending on the time of your departure, you may just be able to take a stroll through the red light district just to say you've done it.
