Getting to Nice Airport

Q: My wife are going on an ocean cruise in September that ends in Monte Carlo, Monaco. We need to get to Cote Azur International in Nice to take our flight to Dubai via Rome. I have done some research on the web….it seems as though the best alternative would be by helicopter - expensive! Any suggestions?- Michael Lester

A: Yes, the helicopter service will get you from Monaco to Nice in around 10 minutes, but it is likely to cost you around 100 Euros each (the fare changes according to season). However, as Nice Airport is only 24 kilometres from Monaco, there are plenty of other more affordable options which would get you there in less than an hour.

One of the easiest would be to catch a taxi. This is likely to cost you 80-90 Euros per taxi, so that slashes the cost by at least half. Even cheaper would be take the bus directly from Monaco to Nice airport, which costs around 16 Euros each. This express shuttle, route 110, leaves from the central station every hour. If you have the time, the scenic train journey is a viable option. There is a regular service between Monaco and Nice, but you would need to take a taxi or bus to the airport. Laden with luggage, a taxi directly from the port in Monaco to the airport is probably your best option.

As with all taxi trips, make sure you have the fare in local currency (taxi drivers never have change!) Also, make sure the taxi meter is visible and not covered by a newspaper or article of clothing. For a longer trip such as this, it is probably best to request the approximate price before you start. Write the price down and show it to the driver (just to make sure there isn't a "misunderstanding" later). Also make it clear that the price is per taxi (for two people), so that the driver does not try to claim the fare was "per person" at the end of the trip, effectively doubling the price.
