Dollars for Singapore

Q: I am going to New Zealand on Singapore Airlines and will be stopping at Singapore Airport for about 11 hours before I get my connecting flight to Christchurch. Would you be able to tell me, more or less, how much currency in Singapore dollars I should take with me as I don't want to sit with surplus Singapore money. - Irene Liebenberg.

A: How much you need really depends on what you want to do. You can take the free Singapore Tour from the airport or go into the city by taxi (around Sing$25.) The cost of food and drinks in Singapore is similar to that in the upmarket shopping centres in Johannesburg and Cape Town. If you decide to rest at the airport, you can book a room in the airport transit hotel. It will cost you about S$65 for a double room for six hours, with additional hours costing S$14 per hour. You can use the swimming pool, sundeck, jacuzzi and gym for around S$10 per person. Basically, you do not really need cash at Singapore Airport as you could charge everything to your credit card. If you prefer using cash I would recommend you have S$100 per person with you. What you don't spend on the outward leg, you can spend on the return journey. And cashing it back into Rands is pretty simple.
