QUESTION: How can I get an upgrade to business or first class on a flight? - Reg Snow
ANSWER: If only we all knew the answer to this one! Other than 'paying' for an upgrade with airmiles, there is no foolproof method of getting bumped up to the land of spacious seating and fine dining. However, two things that will better your chances are making sure you are a member of the airlines' frequent flier scheme and dressing like an executive traveller. A person in business attire will certainly be upgraded before someone in a tracksuit and slip-slops. Single travellers have a better chance of being chosen than couples, so stay solo in the check-in queue and look like you don't belong among the tourist class passengers. Finally, if all else fails, ask to be upgraded. You can say you need space to work on your laptop, but never use illness as a reason (no one wants an ailing passenger infecting or bothering premium passengers). Don't be shy of using a birthday or special occasion to bolster your case. It may just work.
