Round the world ticket

QUESTION: I intend to travel the world for about 12 months (about 20 destinations). I believe that the most economical way to do so is by a ‘round the world’ ticket. I would like to book accommodation in advance and I wonder if you could suggest a ‘one stop’ organization that provides decent accommodation around the globe at a reasonable price ($50-$75). I am 53 years old, so backpacking is not an option. However I would prefer not to spend $120.00+ in hotels. - Chris van der Spuy.

ANSWER: A 'round the world' ticket is certainly the most economical way to travel. However, booking your accommodation in advance may not give you the best price. Many hotels and guest houses will offer special prices to walk-in guests and have special offers available at airports and bus stations. The exception is during high season or a peak period, when booking early is advisable. By booking early you will miss out on taking advantage of the tips and tales from other travellers you meet. However, if you are sure you want to book in advance, your best bet is to research each destination by reading guides and traveller blogs, which are a great source of information. Before you book, check out reviews of the establishments on sites like www.tripadvisor.com. One of the better websites for finding budget accommodation is www.hostelz.com, but you can also try the regular hotel sites like www.hotels.com and www.hoteltravel.com.
