Sleep on a working farm

Q: We like to stay at working farms when travelling from Johannesburg to Cape Town. I seem to remember that some time back there was a web page advertising farms were you can stay overnight. Is that still available? — Peter Thieme

A: There are two websites where you can find extensive listings of guest farms and farm stays (www.farmstay.co.za, and www.sa-venues.com/guest_farms.htm). Be aware that not all the accommodation listed on these sites is on working farms, but there are full details of what to expect. Some of the interesting guest farms listed include Artist’s Paradise, a cattle farm on the Kabeljouwsriver near Jeffreys Bay, the Whistling Duck Farm Cottage at Wakkerstroom and the Ebenaesar Guest House on a grape farm near Kakamas in the Northern Cape.
