Age limit on Otter Trail

QUESTION: My family is considering hiking the Otter Trail in the Tsitsikama National Park. Is there an age restriction - my son is 16 years old and my father-in-law is a very fit 68? Can hikers use cell phones on the hike, how much does it cost and how far in advance do we need to book? - Tommy James

ANSWER: Hikers must be aged 12-65, so your dad-in-law cannot join you. Cell phones are permitted on the hike, but reception is patchy and there is no reception at the sleeping huts. A hiking permit costs R420 per person and you should try to book far in advance, up to 12 months ahead, or else you will have to rely on cancellations.
