Train from Beijing to Tibet

QUESTION: Do you have any information about a new train service between Beijing and Tibet? - Morris E Steyn

ANSWER: The new train service from Beijing to Lhasa is already operational. It takes two days and has been a big success among travellers. However, you are probably referring to the ultra-luxurious service which is due to begin in May next year. Known as the Tangula Express, each train will carry 88 passengers in 40-square-metre suites featuring king-size beds, flat-screen televisions, satellite internet and 24-hour butlers. Managed by the Kempinski hotel group, it will take four or five days to cross the Tibetan plateau. The service is expected to be regarded as one of the great train trips of the world, similar to the Venice Simplon Orient Express in Europe and the Eastern and Oriental Express in Asia.
