Transkei Beach Lodge

Q: I have heard of a backpacker-style lodge on a beach on the Transkei Wild Coast that is part-owned by the local community and offers an authentic African holiday experience. Could you give me contact details. - Jenny Baptiste

A: There may be more than one, but I know that the Bulungula Lodge at the mouth of the Xhora River near Elliotdale is 40%-owned by the residents of the nearby Nqileni village. The resort consists of six traditional Xhosa huts with great sea and forest views. It is powered by solar energy and the rates are an affordable R70-R150 per person per night. It is not easy to get to, but the www.bulungula.com website gives full details. For further information telephone (047) 577 8900. (22/5/11)
