Q: I am planning on taking a week's holiday with my mother who is 64 years old in September this year. She has never been overseas and I would like you to recommend an affordable destination where we can do shopping and sightseeing. I would prefer a destination with a warm climate, maybe China or Dubai. What other destinations do you recommend? What would it cost? - Thabi Ntseke
A: For the best value, you should choose a package which includes flights, hotel accommodation and maybe a tour or two. Europe is pretty expensive, so you are right to look to the east. I would recommend you try to visit a one-flight destination; where you won't have to change flights on route. Of those I would recommend Dubai, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia or Hong Kong. Dubai is very popular among South Africans, but it can be expensive and may lack the historical background that your mother may enjoy. I would probably opt for one of the south-east Asian cities. Visit a travel agent and a few websites (www.travel.co.za and www.thompsons.co.za) to find a package that suits your needs. Hong Kong is a great destination, but the flying time is nearly 14 hours from Johannesburg. Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok are three to four hours closer – and all offer great holiday potential. Singapore is fabulous, with great attractions and shopping. But for bargain-hunting and great value, you can’t beat Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok. Check out the packages and choose the one that gives you the best value. Remember to check out the hotels being offered in the packages on www.tripadvisor.com and opt for those where you are flying with one of the major airlines like Thai, Malaysian, Cathay, Singapore or SAA. You should be able to find a package for around R10,000 per person for a week’s holiday. (29/5/11)
