Rome to Munich

Q: Some friends and I will be touring Italy in September and will then need to get from Rome to Munich. Please can you advise the best (and cheapest) way of doing this. - Moira Bricout

A: The driving distance between the two cities is about 930 kilometres. If you would like to rent a car and drive, you should be able to make it in 8-9 hours if you use the toll roads. However, you are probably more interested in public transportation. Direct fares between the cities appear to be very expensive, starting at around 800 Euros. And there do not appear to be any budget operating on this route. The cheapest airfare I could find was 90 euros on an Air Berlin flight via Vienna. It leaves Rome at 12.45 and arrives at Munich at 16.35. This was available on the www.airberlin.com website. The overnight train service leaves Rome at 19.05 and arrives the next morning at 06.30 - a total travelling time of 11 hours 25 minutes. The cheapest second class fare I could find in September was 49 Euros. There seems to be limited availability at that fare and most second class fares started at 98 Euros. Try the www.raileurope-world.com website to check available fares. (29/5/11)
