Getting Around the Greek Islands

Q: What do you suggest would be the most affordable and quickest means of transport, from Athens to Mykonos and from Mykonos to Santorini? We will be traveling in July. Is it advisable to book hotels or guesthouses in advance? Would three days on both islands be sufficient time? - Annette Doncer

A: As you will be travelling in peak season, it is best to make your transport arrangements well in advance. Overall, your best bet would be to fly from Athens to Mykonos, catch the ferry from Mykonos to Santorini and then fly from Santorini back to Athens. Flights from Athens to Mykonons only take 45 minutes. Two airlines ply this route, Olympic Airways and Aegean Air, with a one-way ticket likely to cost 100-130 Euros. There is no direct flight from Mykonos to Santorini, so you would have to fly via Athens if you wanted to get there by plane. In this case, taking a ferry is a better option. The ferry only takes two hours 35 minutes and ticket prices range from 38-57 Euros. The Santorini to Athens route is serviced by both Olympic and Aegean Airlines. One-way fares range from 80-150 Euros. Of course, you could do all your travel by ferry. The speed and price depends on the service you select, but it would probably mean you would spend two days of your short stay in Greece travelling. When it comes to accommodation, whether or not to book in advance depends on how adventurous you are. If you prefer certainty, then go ahead and book in advance (www.greeka.com or www.greekhotel.com). But you may find better value by booking a room in one of the small guesthouses on arrival. Three days may be enough for sightseeing on picturesque, pricey Santorini, but you may wish to spend an extra day or two on Mykonos to experience a traditional Greek island beach holiday. (22/5/11)
