Mauritius on the Cheap

Q: Are there any cheap guesthouses or budget hotels in Mauritius? I plan to visit in December but don't want to pay resort prices. A private room would be nice, but I will share if I have to. - Brian Dempster

A: Although it is better known for its expensive resorts, there are a number of budget options on the island. The easiest way to find one is to check one of the hostel websites like www.hostels.com, www.hostelworld.com, www.travellerspoint.com and www.hostelbookers.com. One of the small guesthouses that took my fancy was Le Bamboo Hotel, which offers private air conditioned rooms from 21-25 Euros per night. Located close to the bus station in Mahebourg and 10 minutes from Blue Bay beach, it offers free internet access, free bicycle rental and free use of a canoe. There are a number of homes offering rooms for around 30-40 US dollars per night, but you can also find real bargains. The cheapest one I came across was Villa Lisa Holidays, which is located about 100 metres from the beach in Grand Bay. Accommodation starts at 8 US dollars per person. (5/9/10)
