Catch the Train in India

Q: I want to travel from Mumbai to Delhi. Flying seems so unadventurous for India. What bus or train options are there? - Elias Nienaber

A: You can travel by bus from Mumbai to Delhi, but most services require a break in Bhopal or Kota. However, seasoned travellers say bus travel over long distances in India can be very difficult. They say train is a far better option. The best train service is the Mumbai Rajdhani Express, which takes around 16 hours. You leave in the afternoon and arrive in Delhi the next morning. It passes through five states. You should book in first class, which includes bedding and all meals on board. There are two types of air conditioned compartment - a two-sleeper and a four-sleeper - and you can book a lower or upper berth. The first class fare is 3300 rupees(R520), but can cost substantially more when bought from some travel agents. Get further information on the www.indianrail.gov.in website. (5/9/10)
