Q: Could you please advise me on the cheapest route from Civitavecchia port in Italy to Fiumicino airport in Rome? Our cruise agent is most unhelpful. - Roy Munro
A: Most of the cruise liners operate their own transfers from the port to the airport and they would prefer you to use this. However, it is much cheaper to make your own way there. The cheapest way to travel the 50kms between the two points is by train. While there is a service between the port and the airport, you will have to change trains at Roma Ostiense or Roma Trastevere. The ticket should cost you 10-15 Euros per person. To get to Civitavecchia station from the port you can catch a shuttle to the entrance of the port and walk four blocks to the train station or take a taxi from your ship to the station. Be aware that if you have lots of luggage, the trip might be a bit of a nightmare. For further details of latest fares and times, check the http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/homepage_en.html website. There are also a number of shuttle bus services between the port and the airport. A test booking in May with Rome Airport Shuttle gave me a rate of 60 Euros per person for two passengers. If other passengers join you, the price decreases to 40 Euros per person for four passengers and 33 Euros per person for six. You can book on www.rome-airport-shuttle.com. Another shuttle company, Airport Connection Service, quoted 105 Euros per vehicle for a private transfer for two people. Get further details on www.airportconnection.it. A taxi or limousine will cost you anything from 110-120 Euros per vehicle from the port to the airport. You can book in advance on www.tourshuttle.com. (27/2/11)
