Try the French-run Hotel

Q: I am looking for accommodation in Bujumbura in Burundi . The only hotel that has been recommended to me is the Novotel. I am hoping that you can suggest an alternative or two that have a more African feel, but still offer clean, safe accommodation. - Royden Greene

A: The Botanika Hotel is a charming French run hotel with an excellent restaurant. There are only seven rooms, decorated in boutique hotel style with four-poster beds, lovely bathrooms, satellite television and a minibar. Room rates start at 90 US dollars per night. For further information, check out the www.hotelbotanika.com website. A city centre alternative worth considering is the Amahoro Hotel, which offers clean and adequate rooms in a good location (www.hotelamahoro.com). The best upmarket leisure choice is the Hotel Club du Lac Tanganyika , a relaxed lakeside retreat with swimming pool and other facilities. Rates range from 140 US dollars per night (www.hotelclubdulac.com). At the other end of the scale, the budget option with the best atmosphere is the Saga Town Residence. It is friendly, packed with African bric-a-brac and has a good restaurant. Double rooms available from 25 US dollars (www.sagaplage.com). (25 Apr 2010)
