Q: During a visit to Perth , my first to Australia , I would like to visit one or two art galleries that provide a representative look at Australian art, especially aboriginal works. Could you please provide a recommendation? - Elsa du Preez
A: There are three major outlets that should provide you with the overview that you seek. The first is the Art Gallery of Western Australia (www.artgallery.wa.gov.au), which is the centre of the city's vibrant art scene.Founded in 1895, occupies a precinct of three heritage buildings on the south-eastern corner of the Perth Cultural Centre. It boasts an excellent collection of Aboriginal art, most of which are on canvas instead of rock. The Holmes à Court Gallery in East Perth (www.holmesacourtgallery.com.au) showcases the work of Western Australian artists. It only opened in 2000, bringing to fruition a long held dream of Janet Holmes à Court to house her collection for public viewing. Finally, there is the Creative Native Aboriginal Art Gallery and Emporium (www.creativenative.com.au), which is more of a retailer than a traditional art gallery. Established in 1987, Creative Native in Forrest Chase has grown to become the largest specialist retailer of authentic, unique and contemporary Aboriginal artworks, didgeridoos, souvenirs and unique gifts in Western Australia.
