Q: We heard about an event where families are allowed to sleep over in a museum in New York, but have been unable to find out further details. We would love to experience this with our kids on a trip to the US later this year. Do you have any information? - Beverley Brandt.
A: Amazingly, such a thing exists. The Natural History Museum in the Big Apple has a sleepover programme, inspired by the Night at the Museum movie where the exhibits come to life after dark. The sleepover programme allows families with children aged 8-12 to spend the night in the building. They can't guarantee that any of the dinosaurs will spring to life, but the museum management do their best to create a memorable experience. Children are free to wander around the exhibitions with a flashlight and there is an Imax screening. Get there early to get a bed with an agreeable view. The museum provides sleeping cots, but you must bring your own bedding and pillow. The sleepover programme only takes place on special dates and lasts from 5:45 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. The cost is 129 US dollars per person and includes the cot, snacks, breakfast, admission to the museum for the following day and a goodie bag with key chain and stickers. Further details are in the www.amnh.org website. Book early to avoid disappointment. And remember, the dinosaurs are on the fourth floor. (10 May 2009)
