Hotel in Aix-en-Provence

Q: I am taking my mother to Aix-en-Provence in the south of France for a few days holiday while in Paris in September. Could you recommend a nice hotel close to the town that would be real treat for my mom without costing a fortune?. - Jenny Simons

A: If you want to feel like a local, stay at the La Petite Mason de Carla, which is in the heart of the old town and consists of only five rooms and a suite at reasonable rates. (www.maison-de-carla.com). If you can't get in there, try the Hotel le Pigonnet, am 18th-century Provencal house with 50 rooms, formal gardens and an outdoor pool. It is situated to the south of the town, but within easy walking distance. (www.hotelpigonnet.com). My third choice would be La Villas Gallici, a Relais & Chateau estate outside of town near the market. It was founded by three friends from the area and is a charming place to stay ( www.villagallici.com). (3 May 2009)
