Q: We are planning to visit Bali in December. We have to decide between a hotel in Kuta and Nusa Dua. I have been researching the areas on the internet and have asked travel agents which to recommend, but I am still undecided. My impression is that Nusa Dua is smarter and safer, but Kuta has more atmosphere. Am I correct and which area would you recommend? - Louise le Grange
A: Your impressions are spot-on. Nusa Dua is a part of the island known for some of the most luxurious resorts. The hotels line some great stretches of sand and many have excellent facilities. You can expect most of these resort hotels to have their own health spas and a selection of restaurants to choose from. Kuta is the "older" part of Bali and remains the area where the surfers and party crowd congregate. This is where you find the nightclubs, bars and restaurants for which Bali is famed. It also offers the best "market" shopping. Guests from Nusa Dua do not have to miss out on Kuta's charms, though, as they can catch taxis or shuttle buses from their resorts to Kuta at night. Your decision should be based on what you expect from your holiday and who you are travelling with. If you prefer to be based in a luxury resort or are travelling with children, then Nusa Dua is probably for you. If you are travelling solo or with friends and enjoy eating and drinking in different spots every night and prefer to spend your days on the beach as opposed to within a resort, then Kuta should be your choice. Be aware that although Nusa Dua and Kuta are usually the options offered first-time visitors, there are a number of other areas on the island offering great holiday experiences. My preference is for Seminyak, which is the home of some great restaurants, boutique resorts and rental villas. (26/9/10)
