Q: There are a number of attractive packages to Phuket and Krabi in Thailand being offered at the moment, but they are confusing. Could you assist me with a guide on the various beach resorts and which ones to choose? My group consists of a couple with two adult children. - Betsy King
A: Firstly, Krabi is on the mainland of Thailand and is about two hours drive from Phuket. The main beach resort is Ao Nang, while two of the area's exciting destinations are the Phi Phi Islands and Railay Beach. Krabi is a laid-back family destination specialising in outdoor activities and adventure sports. Phi Phi and Railay are particularly popular with young travellers and backpackers. Now to Phuket. The beach resorts on Phuket island can be substantially different, although they all offer the basics of a Thai beach holiday. And you can travel between the various centres. The most popular resort town is Patong Beach, which boasts a magnificient three kilometre-long beach, superb shopping and wild nightlife. Some of the more eye-opening attractions may not be great for families with young children or those who are easily offended. The family favourites are Karon and Kata beach. Both have a good selection of restaurants, bars and shops, but many people head for Patong at night. However, for those who enjoy a quieter holiday and less busy beaches Kata and Karon are the best bet. There are a number of other resorts, such as Kamala, Surin and Laguna, but most of the offers available in South Africa this season are in Patong and Karon. There are also a few offers to Phang Nga - these are generally located in Khao Lak, which is also on the mainland and offers quiet beaches fringed by a spectacular national park. So, decide which atmophere is likely to appeal most to your family and book there When booking at any resort, make sure you check that it does have the things that are important to you, such as satellite TV, air conditioning in the rooms, Internet connectivity, a swimming pool or a good swimming beach nearby. Don't take anything for granted. If any of your party has trouble climbing stairs, be careful of resorts offering great views; check whether there is a steep climb to the hotel and whether it has lifts (elevators). (3/10/10)
