A: There are no direct flights from South Africa to Manila in the Philippines. This means you will need to fly via another country. Your best bets would probably be to go via Singapore on Singapore Airlines or Bangkok on Thai International Airways. There are some low-cost carriers you could access, such as Tiger Airways, which flies between Singapore and Manila, and Air Asia, which flies between Kuala Lumpur and Manila. If you want to ensure you have the best fare, you can also check ticket prices from Hong Kong (Cathay Pacific) or one of the Middle Eastern airlines like Emirates. A good travel agent should be able to find the most cost-effective routing, but you can also check the airline's internet sites for special fares. Like most big cities, Manila suffers from petty crime and criminals who target travellers. You should always be be aware of potential dangers and take the usual precautions: be careful when you change money, don't walk around wearing jewellery, leave your passport in your hotel safe, stay in a crowd and try to only use your credit card at major hotels and stores.
