Q: Is it possible to visit the casinos in Macau from Hong Kong for an evening and return to Hong Kong the same night? What is the cost of transport, do I need to book in advance and do I need to get a visa for Macau? - Michael Renton
A: Ferries run 24 hours a day from Hong Kong to Macau, with a ferry every 15 minutes from 7am to midnight and then one every hour through the night. They depart from the Shun Tak in Sheung Wan on Hong Kong Island and from the China Ferry Terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon. It takes 60-75 minutes depending on sea conditions and the fare ranges from 124-175 Hong Kong dollars (R113-R160) one way. It is not necessary to book the trip from Hong Kong in advance. However, late night return ferries can get full, so you are advised to book your return trip when you arrive in Macau. If you are travelling on a South African passport, you do not need a visa. You will be granted a 30-day stay on arrival. (27/3/11)
