Living on a Farm in the Outback

Q: We hope to visit Alice Springs in Australia early next year and would love to stay on one of the cattle ranches. Is this possible? – Graham Carleton

A: A number of farms in the Australian Outback are now offering travellers the chance to experience farm life. One of the most interesting farmstays near Alice Springs is the Ooraminna Homestead. This 2,500 square kilometre cattle station is only a 30-minute drive from the town's airport but offers a chance to experience the serenity and vastness of the outback. Activities include learning all about the farm, rock climbing, bushwalking, bird watching, star gazing or just relaxing on the farmhouse verandah with a book. Accommodation options range from a luxury bush cabin to a former police station and gaol. You can also sleep under the thousands like the men do while on stock camp. You will be issued with a swag, a comfortable bedroll with mattress, linen and blanket. Prices for bed, breakfast and dinner range from 150 Australian dollars to 250 Australian dollars per night. (www.ooraminnahomestead.com.au). Another option is the Bond Springs Outback Retreat, which is located 20 minutes north of Alice Springs in the MacDonnell mountains. This 1515 square kilometre cattle ranch offers accommodation in two self-contained cottages, with breakfasts delivered to the rooms. Rates range from 231 Australian dollars per night for the two-bedroom cottage sleeping four and 277 Australian dollars for the three-bedroom cottage sleeping five. Guests can use the swimming pool and tennis court and take part in bushwalking and tours of the farm (www.outbackretreat.com.au). (4/9/11)
