Finding Affordability on Santorini

Q: We are pensioners and would like to find budget accommodation on the Greek island of Santorini, preferably near the harbour. Is there any chance of pensioner's discount? - Suki Van Niekerk

A: Santorini is one of the most expensive islands in Greece, but it is still possible to find affordable accommodation. I am not sure whether you would prefer to be close to the actual harbour (which is a busy transit point) or higher up the mountain in one of the scenic towns overlooking the port. The main tourist zones are the towns of Fira, Imerovigli, Firastefani and Oia which have the "picture postcard" views and are the most expensive. Then there are the towns of Perissa and Kamari, best known for their black sand beaches. There are plenty of other villages, close to archaelogical sites or beaches, which are less known and offer the best value. Perhaps one of the more developed areas close to all facilities would be best for your group. Anytime outside of peak season - July and August - you should be able to negotiate affordable accommodation with a travel agent on arrival or one of the many guesthouse touts. However, if you would like to ensure your accommodation in advance, then it is best to check out some discount websites. Try www.travellerspoint.com, www.hotels.com, www.booking.com and www.santorini-hotels.info. With many hotel rooms priced at hundreds of dollars a night, a nice room in a hotel with a swimming pool costing less than 100 US dollars would be considered affordable. I don’t know of discounts specifically for pensioners. A popular mid-range choice is the Kalimera Hotel, which is located in the settlement of Akrotiri on the southern coast. This family-run hotel does not overlook the volcano but is close to great views, has a swimming pool. I was quoted 83 US dollars for a double room in late September(www.hotels.com). For simple accommodation in the heart of Fira, you could try Villa Toula. Double rooms were available for 74 US dollars (www.travellerspoint.com). Or you can try Villa Romantic, located 800 metres from Fira's central square. The complex has a swimming pool and free Wi-Fi. Double rooms are available from just 50 US dollars per night (www.booking.com). For a beach holiday, you might like to consider the Holiday Beach Resort on Perrissa beach. This guesthouse is close to the beach, has a nice pool and has rooms for 34 US dollars (www.travellerspoint.com). (28/8/11)
