From Mumbai to the City

Q: I would like to find out about getting from Mumbai Airport to the city. Do I have to pay the very high hotel transfer costs or can I get a bus, train or taxi to the city? I am staying on Marine Drive. - Solly James

A: Taxis are the main way to get from Mumbai Airport to the city. The taxi system can be very daunting for first-time visitors, but you will be fine if you use the pre-pay taxi booths situated in the international terminals 2A and 2C. You pay a set price for your journey and you receive a ticket. You are then taken to your taxi and driven to your destination. You are not expected to tip the driver or pay any excess for luggage, etc. The journey from the airport to the main beachfront is around 32kms, but heavy traffic can make it a long trip. The set fare is likely to be around 500 rupees (R80), depending on your exact destination, the vehicle and whether it has airconditioning or not. I don't know what rate your hotel charges for a transfer, but it may be worth considering if the rate is fair. Being met on arrival and escorted directly to your hotel is a hassle-free way to begin your visit to Mumbai. (14/11/10)
