Fears About Margate

Q: I usually take my family to Durban for holidays, but this time we have booked in Margate for Easter. We want to explore the coast and were advised that the South Coast offers a pleasant beach alternative to Durban. I am nervous taking children there, as we only know Durban. Am I being silly with my anxieties? What should I expect and, if possible, what specific things should we guard against? - Moabi Motaung

A: It can be nerve-wracking going to a new place, especially with children. But you should have no worries about your planned trip to Margate. It is a fabulous destination with plenty to do and caters for all interests and budgets. In many ways, it is a smaller version of Durban and attracts big crowds over Easter. The beaches are great and you can take daytrips to nearby resorts and the many tourist attractions. Among these is the Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve, animal and reptile farms and the Wild Coast casino complex. There is plenty to keep the children amused and entertained. You will find other holidaymakers friendly and very willing to share their ideas and answer any queries you may have. I don't know your specific concerns, but I am sure you will have a wonderful, hassle-free holiday. (27/2/11)
