Expect a Freezing Reception in New York

Q: We will be in New York in early January next year. Can you advise us on what to expect weather-wise and if it is a good time to visit? - Heather Styles

A: This is one of the coldest months of the year in New York and there is a good chance of snow. The average high temperature is only 4 degrees Celsius and the average low a bone-chilling -3 degrees Celsius. The number of tall buildings can also make any wind feel colder and stronger. However, if you dress warmly, there are some advantages to visiting the Big Apple at this time. Tourism drops after the New Year celebrations, so you can find cheaper accommodation in this expensive city and you can take advantage of sales at many of the top stores. It is also easier to get tickets to Broadway shows and tables at restaurants. You can still use the hop-on, hop-off double-decker buses, as they cover the open deck when the weather is bad. So, if you are prepared to brave the streets clad in waterproof boots and a thick coat, you can have a good New York vacation. (4/12/11)
