The Day Bali Closes Down

Q: We will be visiting Bali over their New Year, I understand that much of the island closes down at this time. Should we change our dates? - Helena Graham

A: The Balinese New Year falls on March 23 in 2012, which is the day following the dark moon of the spring equinox. Most people I have met do not find the observance of this Hindu religious day a problem. There is no traffic on the streets, no shops are open and even street restaurants and bars are closed. The ports and the airport are effectively closed down as well. People are expected to stay at home, with the radio or TV turned off. Traditional security men, known as pecalangs, ensure that no-one goes out onto the street or makes a noise. What this means for tourists is that you stay within the hotel property. There will be no entertainment or music, but you can use the pool and meals are available. It may seem dull, but this day of enforced rest can be countered by the fascinating and entertaining festivals and religious ceremonies on either side of Nyepi Day. If you are interested in Balinese culture, this is a great time to visit the island. However, if you feel you will be losing a day of beach and partying, then choose another period for your holiday.
