Q: We are planning to do a Nile River cruise early next year and need some information. We hope to take the trip in June - what are the pitfalls of cruising in the low season? Is cabin location on the boat important? How much should we count on paying per day on the cruise? - Arthur Lategan
A: October to mid-April is the best time to travel on the Nile, but trips from mid-April to September can be significantly cheaper. However, it can be very hot and you may have to switch boats at river locks closed due to low water levels. This means switching cabins and repacking and unpacking your luggage, which can be a pain. Where your cabin is situated on the ship can make a big difference to your cruise. Avoid the back of the boat because of engine vibrations and stay away from the onboard venues used for night entertainment. The higher you are above water level, the better the view. Finally, the rates differ widely, from 100 US dollars per day on a regular ship to more than 300 dollars for a luxury liner. You'll get best value on a package which includes all airfares and excursions. (12/9/10)
