Q: I’ve always had the goal to summit Mount Kilimanjaro. I believe that this is possible through guided climbs/walks up to the summit. Could you please provide information on what options are available to me to join such a climb up Kilimanjaro? I’m not a climber, but I am in reasonable physical condition. Are there any specific physical requirements one have to comply with before you can join such a venture? Also, a range of costs per option would be useful. Finally, when is the best time to go? - Henry Arendse
A: Summiting Mount Kilimanjaro is very popular, with about 20,000 climbers attempting it every year. The easiest way to join them is to sign up with one of the organised excursions. These are provided by private companies, who organise everything from taxes and guides to meals and accommodation. There are more than 200 licensed operators, so you have a huge choice. There are six main routes to the summit. A typical climb covers 50-60kms and takes about seven days to complete. There are no specific physical requirements and as long as you are reasonably fit, you should be okay. The best time to climb is during the two "dry" seasons, namely January to mid-March and June to October. The cost of the excursions vary considerably depending on a number of variables. However, you should expect to pay 1500-3000 US dollars (R12000-R24000) per person. This may sound expensive, but you need to bear in mind that park fees for a six-day/five night trek come to 635 US dollars per person. Therefore, you need to be careful of operators offering bargain prices - they may be cutting back on staff or equipment. Two of the companies organising climbs are 4th Summit (www4thsummit.com) and Climb Mount Kilimanjaro (www.climbmountkilimanjaro.com). (19/9/10)
