Train Trip in NZ

Q: We are planning to visit relatives in Wellington, New Zealand during late December/early January. We have heard about a day train journey (it takes about 12 hours I believe) which runs from Auckland to Wellington. We would appreciate it if you could tell us more about this service, the cost, how/where to book etc? - Sandi van Niekerk

A: This service is known as the Overlander. It travels through the heart of the North Island, taking you from Auckland to Wellington. Along the way you pass the ski towns of National Park and Ohakune. You also see fantastic views of New Zealand farmland, the volcanic plateau, Mount Ruapehu, the world famous Raurimu Spiral, and stunning river gorges. All carriages have panoramic windows and there are open air viewing decks, but for a real treat you can book seats the Observation carriage at the rear of the train. It takes 12 hours, departing at 7.25am and arriving at 7.25pm. I did a test booking in January 2010 and the fare was 129 dollars per person one way. You can book on the www.tranzscenic.co.nz website.
