Q: I am considering taking my wife to either Mauritius or Phuket for our 10th wedding anniversary. Which destination would you recommend? - Jacques Nel
A: The two destinations are similar in that they are tropical islands offering beautiful beaches and lovely hotels, but the type of holiday they offer is different. Hotels in Mauritius tend to include meals as part of the packages and guests generally spend most of the time in the resort. They make full use of the beaches near the hotel and the hotel's swimming pools and facilities. In Phuket, most packages only offer breakfast and guests spend a lot more time dining out in restaurants on the island and taking daytrips and excursions to neighbouring islands or places of interest on the island. Transport in Phuket is plentiful, so it is easy to get around and "do your own thing". In Mauritius it is easier to base yourself at the resort and relax close to home base. I am generalising, of course, as you can determine your own style of holidaying if you make the effort. Prices tend to be comparable, as you pay more upfront for a holiday in Mauritius, while you spend more time in Phuket dining out and shopping. So, your choice should depend on what you want to do on your honeymoon. I think Mauritius encapsulates the "romantic dream island", while Phuket is probably more exotic and exciting. (12 July 2009)
