Train Ferry to Sicily

Q: Is the train ferry from Reggio to Messina in Sicily still operating? Can one travel there on one ticket from Rome? - Rob Hastead.

A: Yes. The trian departs from Rome's Termini station. On arrival at the port of Valla San Giovanni near Reggio Calabria in southern Italy the train carriages are loaded onto a ferry for the one-hour crossing of the Straits of Messina. On arrival in Messina in Sicily they are rolled back onto tracks and the train continues to Palermo. You can either stay in your seat on the train or wander about on deck during the crossing. The entire journey takes 10-13 hours. (16 May 2010)
