Q: I am planning a honeymoon in Mauritius, Seychelles, Mozambique or Thailand in late december. Which destination would have favourable weather? What are our options? - Chipo
A: Decembers in Mauritius, Seychelles and Mozabique are hot and balmy, although it can be rainy and humid. In Thailand, where it is mid-winter, the weather is perfect, with sunny days and little chance of rain. All four destinations regard the Christmas-New Year period as peak season, so you will not be able to benefit from low-season specials. Mozambique is, of course, closest to South Africa and you may be able to drive there. However, if you are visiting the islands it is probably best to fly from Johannesburg. There are bargains to be had, but the idyllic tropical resorts can be as expensive as anywhere else in the world. Mauritian resorts specialise in catering for the honyemoon market, but try not to end up in a large resort packed with families. Seychelles is similar to Mauritius, alhtough it is possible to find some small hotels on surrounding islands that would be great for a honeymoon. Thailand has some magnificent island resorts, some of which can be affordable, but this is offset by the high cost and unavailability of flights to south-east Asia during this time. In the end, there is not likely to be too much difference in price between the four destinations so you should book your trip based on what is available in your price bracket. Book so as soon as possible as many of the better resorts sell up well in advance. (16 May 2010)
