Langkawi or Phuket?

Q: We are trying to decide whether to visit Langkawi in Malaysia or Phuket in Thailand. We are flying to Kuala Lumpur and the price to visit either of the islands is about the same. We have read a lot about each island, but few comparisons. Can you help? - Fiona Ellis

A; Both are superb holiday destinations. Both offer great hotels, lovely beaches and a hospitable reception. Those favouring a more laid-back island with nooks and crannies to explore may favour Langkawi. However, Phuket wins out for shopping and nightlife. In the end, probably the best bet is to take a look at what is being offered on each island in terms of free tours, discounts, grading of hotel, etc. The decision is really up to you - but you can't really go wrong.
