Behave in Dubai

Q: My family will be travelling to Dubai next month. I assume that visitors dress as they would in any other tourist city. However, are there any religious or social restrictions we should be aware of? - Annie Lexren

A: As an international destination, you don't really have to make big changes to your travelling wardrobe. Howver, there are some social norms that you need to be aware of. Generally, people in Dubai are very fashionable and you can't really overdress. But know do need to know when not to underdress. You will see mini-skirts and shorts, but these are worn by those who know the ins and outs of the city and avoid the ultra-conservative areas. Men should not wear shorts unless they are at the beach. Long, light trousers and shirts with collar are appropriate for malls, museums and souks. In malls and tourist areas, women should keep to knee-length skirts and tops that cover the shoulders and not low-cut. For visiting souks, mosques or the museum, they should wear long skirts or trousers and loose tops to cover down to the elbows. The general rule is to keep shoulders covered (or take along a pashmina to cover up). One thing always to remember is to wear clean socks at all times, as you will have to leave your shoes at the door when you enter a local's house or some buildings. (27 June 2010)
