Stopover en route to Australia

Q: My wife and I will be travelling to Australia next year and, instead of taking a direct flight, we would like to take advantage of a stopover en route in Asia to break the trip. Which stopover do you recommend so that we can make the most of our rather limited funds? - Andy Blackman

A: Your stopover will largely depend on the airline you choose to fly with, as some of the best stopover deals are often sold with the air ticket. Your major options for a stopover would be Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Hong Kong. Hong Kong and Singapore are great destinations for a stopover, but hotels tend to be more expensive than in Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur. But before you decide, check what stopover deals are being offered by Singapore Airlines. In Bangkok you can find great four-star hotels for as little as R500 per night and in Kuala Lumpur prices are also very affordable. Check the budget-beating hotel websites like www.agoda.com and www.booking.com to find excellent rates. Another great site for last-minute bookings is www.latestays.com. Both the Thai and Malaysian capitals offer very reasonable city tours, so these may be your best bet. (21/11/10)
