Singapore is Fantastic

Q: During March 2010 my wife and I visited Singapore. It was fantastic - everything works. Would we get that 'fantastic' feel by a visit to Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur? - A Mills

A: Both Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur are fascinating, exciting cities worth visiting. They are certainly not the same as Singapore, which promotes itself as a spotless, crime-free shopping mecca. Kuala Lumpur does not attract as many tourists as the other cities, but it is a hidden gem that is gaining support. It has excellent shopping, a surprisingly diverse gastronomic scene and some great attractions. It is friendly and relatively crime-free and an interesting blend of Malay and Chinese cultures. Stay in the "Golden Triangle" and be sure to visit the famous Petronas Towers for an incredible view and Chinatown for bargains. Bangkok can be chaotic and crazy, but is charming and thrilling. With its world-famous shopping markets and wild nightlife, it scores highest of all cities in south east Asia. Much depends on where you stay - different parts of the city attract different types and this could determine whether you love it or hate it. Stick to the streets around Sukhumvit Road, Silom Road and the riverfront for the best hotels. Bangkok is not a bland city - you will either love it or hate it. (9/1/11)
