Q: We plan to visit Pompeii and the Amalfi coast in June 2012 and thought we’d fly to Venice and catch a train to Naples. I have been trying to research train travel on the Internet but am finding it a minefield. Could you recommend a high-speed day train (1st class) and advise of the steps I need to follow to ensure reserved seats and advise of the time the trip will take. - Amanda Chaplin.
A: Italia Rail (Trenitalia) have not yet released the timetable for the period you are interested in. They are currently offering booking for travel departing up to December 10, 2011. The timetables are updated in May for their Summer/Fall and November for their Winter/Spring schedule. Based on this summer's timetable, there are plenty of services daily with a journey time of four hours 40 minutes to seven hours 50 minutes. However, most have one connection, such as Milan or Rome. The most convenient service, without any connections, is Train 9419. It departs Venezia S. Lucia at 15:27 and arrives at Napoli Centrale at 20:38. Prices listed for first class seats on www.italiarail.com range from 306 US dollars (R2982) to 480 US dollars (R3267) per person. You need to regularly check the www.trenitalia.com and the www.raileurope-world.com websites and book when they list the timetable for next summer. (17/7/11)
