Jakarta can be Fascinating

Q: My husband and I have decided to visit Jakarta, as it is one of the places we have never visited. Since making the booking we have had “not so good" reports about the place. What can you suggest for the two days we will be there? - Nadine le Roux

A: Don't despair - Jakarta is a fascinating city to visit. Although it may not have the glamour of some of its Asian rivals, the Indonesian capital has its own charm. For one, the former Dutch colony is steeped in a rich culture, with interesting architecture and cultural relics. Of the various parts of the city, you should head for south Jakarta if you are interested in upmarket malls and the best shopping in the city, while the western part is home to a fabuous Chinatown, nightlife and entertainment. Some of the attractions you might consider visiting are the National Museum, which documents the Dutch colonisation; the Ragunan Zoo, with its Komodo dragons and orangutans; the Sunda Kelapa, a fish market at the mouth of the Ciliwung River; and the Taman Mini Indonesia park, if only for the stunning orchid garden.
